star diagnostic system

DAS, Xentry, WIS, EPC...... I need help with what I need to get in regards to having a system so I can do my own diagnostic to help me find issues and to stay on top of pre-emptive maintenance.
I see all kinds of setups systems on eBay. Now is see setups that have the laptop and the multiplexer connectors and all the software and programs.
but I see what looks like some kind of smaller portable device thing, now is that what it is a potable unit that can do the same thing or is it something I should not be looking in to?
I don't want to go all crazy and get something that is up to date on all the cars and expensive I just need something that can connect to my car and be up to date on all software for it and be able to do my diags myself and save to $185 just to do a diagnostic from my Indy shop.
any help any resource sites or complete write ups that can help and give me info or point me to, etc.... Much appreciated.
Thanks all,
Dan

I suggest everybody to get a Lenovo x230 then just get a Acronis Image of entire system preinstalled + C4
I also have a dell 630 but x230 has touchscreen and I5, lot's faster to tap the screen for some manipulation
on ebay dell 630 is 80$ +-
x230 same price
you can also get a C4 + preinstalled HD
for dell 630 it's plug and play
for the X230, install the preinstalled drive or self installed
then get Lenovo updater 5, run it, it's all automatic
then enjoy

DO NOT use batteries in the C4 (burns the device out after a while due to poor voltage management)

avoid stupid wifi, only problems,
just plug LAN
trow the green provided lan cable (it will break C4 connector) in the trash and buy this one
