Looking to buy W216, not sure which
Hello guys!
For last couple weeks I've been looking at W216 CLs and the more I look at them, the more Im falling in love.
But unlike other cars, this one doesn't seem to have many long term owner reviews or any secondhand buyers guides - things to watch out for, maintenance comparisons between 500, 550, 600 and the 63AMG and 65AMG etc.
So what exactly am I thinking of getting? This is the first question I'd like to hear input from you. Probably pre-facelift (as price is much lower), but AMG bodykit is a must. I would prefer 6.3AMG, but those seem to go for $10k more than AMG-packed CL500. Also maintenance must be twice as big as well right? Besides I already have a performance car.
Second question: How does the maintenance compare between all models?
Third: General second hand buying tips. Should I avoid high milage ones, or do these cars go like tanks for 500k KM if maintained well? What are the things to watch out for?
Btw I'm located in Latvia, and here are a couple options I picked:
https://www.ss.lv/msg/lv/transport/c...600/dxflc.html
https://www.ss.lv/msg/lv/transport/c...500/eddkm.html

These cars are mechanically identical to W221 sedan and should have similar mechanical reliability. Some of the non-common parts are much more expensive. As an example, it is not uncommon for the seat air bladders to fail after a few years. Replacement of the passenger seat air bladder can cost $5000. This is what my after market extended warranty company paid for a failure one month before the expiration of my 7 year extended warranty. The CL550 designation is used for US models and is identical to a CL500 sold in Europe (same engine).

I think you might find the facelifted cars to be more modern and up to date. In any version you buy. I think in EU the CL 500 will out perform the old 63 and cost you a lot less to maintain.

I have friends with these cars:
W222 S500, C217 S500 Coupe
W216 CL550 TwinTurbo (in Europe called CL500), one is chipped 500BHP
2012 SL550 TwinTurbo
....they all were slower than my CL63 on autobahn from 60 all the way to 180MPH. This is not from forums, this is my own experience. Now I don't know what kind of 63's you get there, but I really have a feeling like you guys get a different setup, because it doesn't make sense. I might even record my run with C217 S500 Coupe (has 450BHP or something like that, stock) and you will see how much slower it is than a 63.
Found on my phone this, it is not a proper race, but we had a run there, I started first, then he went to catch me, given the fact that GTR is a monster, one would expect it to pass the 63 in a matter of seconds, which it didn't. It would have passed me eventually, but look at how it had to go all the way to ~180MPH to catch up to me. And it is not like I started 10 seconds earlier. I have also raced W221 S65 and 2004 SL600. The S65 was faster, but literally by inches, the SL600 was slower. Make an acceleration video of your car, I will make of mine, and we will see how much faster the 600 is, if it is faster at all.

and .................. of course the CL550 even with chip will not outperform the N/A 63.

Same experience here in the US - CL63 is by far faster and handles better than any non AMG CL.
Mr. 2014CL600 is convinced that his post facelift CL600 is the ultimate

Not convinced,it's a matter of fact. Look at the value of your pre facelifted car and the face lifted cars, the price difference is enormous. Your 10 is fat and my word white, no imagination at all. Looks like an upside down bathtub

I personally prefer the pre-facelift look; IMHO post facelift CL looks generic and oh so booooooring
Not to mention that non AMG CL drives like a living room couch on wheels...

Well, my very famous designer friend who designed cars for a living disagrees with you on design. His exact words are, " over bloated, picnched *** with a lot of dumb lines, especially the front fenders and the fat hood" he thinks they are as bad as I do. He also says that model needs to he hidden in a dark color to hide all the defects in the design. That is from an expert who was in the industry for over 45 years. He knows design as he must have over 35 million dollars in his car collection. I agree with him. The mystic blue one that someone posted actually looks very nice. Still not a fan of the bloated look, I personally prefer the more angular design of the post facelifted cars. It's IMHO and an experts. I do know the 11-14 are hard to come by and most are 2nd and 3rd hand cars. So most people take what they can afford.

I am always perplexed by people basing others credibility on their length of service in the industry and, most importantly, personal wealth

He is James Powers. I'm sure you have heard of him. As for me. I'm more than well off but by no means in his category. I have no issues in knowing others have more than myself. Remember there will always be someone richer, smarter, younger and better looking,so be happy with who you and what you have.

Just wanted to show you how much less your 2010 CL63 is worth vs the exact same car in a same year miles and color CL600
1st pic is your car<br/>2nd pic a 600 <br/>Your car is so special, kinda like a Honda Accord

Blue book values of CL class vehicles are not necessarily accurate since there are a very limited number of these vehicles in existence and very few are resold each year. Years ago, I had a 500SEC totaled in an accident. The insurance adjuster looked at the Blue book value and thought it was extremely undervalued. He looked for similar vehicles offered for sale in the south west states over the previous 90 days and only found three. He then took the average of the three asking prices and assumed it represented a vehicle in average condition with average mileage. He then compared that to my vehicle and concluded mine was worth the highest asking price. He had no idea whether anyone actually paid the asking price. Bottom line was the insurance company valued my vehicle at TWICE the Blue book value. The insurance company was State Farm.

I totally agree but my point is the CL63 will never be worth what a 600 is. My insurance company allows me to do declared value, which I have at 200k and they increase it 15% each year automatically. Since I only drive 500 miles a year at most I'll never have any miles on my car. I just turned 1,500 miles on my CL600.

Time to grow up, buddy!
"My car is more expansive than your car", really? ;-)
Guess some people remain insecure and have to prove themselves even when they look like adults.
Pathetic...
Enjoy driving your presious, one of a kind automobile 500 miles/year!

You actually didn't understand my post... Maybe you need to pay more attention when reading ;-)
...and yes, I am and will enjoy driving my cars regardless of how expensive or cheap they are!

I don't understand this guy.
I have many friends with Mercedes cars, some have AMG's, some non AMG's, but we all have one thing in common; we love our cars and we always praise our cars. A guy with SLS would never say that CL is piece of cheap crap, a guy with S-Class would never say anything bad about a guy with a C-Class. We support each other, we are a community. MBWORLD is a community.
Don't understand, don't approve. The more he speaks about the facelifted CL the more I start to hate these cars. Yes, I find a face-lifted AMG more beautiful than my car (only AMG though), but at the end of the day .... almost same cars, who cares?!? I have heard from many people that they like pre-face more. And no matter what he says about the 600. The 6.2 liter N/A engine is already a legend, which will be remembered long after today. It is not the case of 600, it will never be.
+1 on the fact that 500/600 drives like a living room couch. Some folks might like it, some might hate it.
2014CL600 >> You are rich, beautiful, perfect man. You have perfect cars and we all are just bunch of jealous losers, right? Okay, okay, I am fine with that as long as you stop making your car something it is not. I don't want to hate the face-lifted CL. )

I consider the CL beautiful. I hope your friend didn't design Fiat Multipla, that would explain something
