Navigation update

Found an MB dlr. whose parts dept. will sell me the update. Local dlr. parts won't. But, local dlr. service will do the install. Don't ask me, I didn't ask them. Seems stupid. The SA said it'd take about three hrs., w/ a battery back up plugged in. Seems a long time to sit in the reception area.

But, w/ the dlr. install and my purchase cost, sans value of my time, the update will be about $325. Genuine MB "parts" installed by an MB dlr.

Is $325 high/low/reasonable?

Thanks.

I've been researching myself. Hope somebody chimes in with a source as this is absolutely a DIY project with one exception. We need the disc, easy to
Find but we also need a code.

The dealer can get it of course but so can others. Am hoping someone chimes in to help or refer. Is so please pm me as well if that Is easier.

i did this a number of times in a 2008 S class I used to own. Same system more or less but in the 3.5 system they now require a code.

i have a 2012 CL550 myself.

NAV Update

I have a 2009 CL63 and would also love to know of any update options. I see some DVDs on Ebay, but unsure if they will work.

If I recall you may be fine to do the install yourself without a code. I think your year was before they added the code requirement.

Do a search to confirm but I believe you are version 3 and if you don't need a code then you simply install yourself with the car running or hooked up to a battery tender. I did this a few times with my S550 of the same vintage and it took an hour or so- again I never needed a code but the newer ones do. They added this so we couldn't do it ourselves and MB could rip us off as usual. There is no purpose to needing a code other than to prevent DIY.

if I still had the discs I would mail them for free but I threw them out when I sold that car a couple years ago. The discs should be easy to find for cheap though.

Thanks for the response. I wonder if those on Ebay would work? I am not sure when the nav was last updated but I can tell it's been a while. Can I just buy one of the latest copies and install it?

Yes BUT you must buy the version for your car. You cannot buy the versions for the newer cars but you can buy a more recent map for yours. I think your version is likely 3 and then just find the newest year. Probably 2015/2016 but thats just a guess.

you are supposed to have a battery tender on or you can just start the car and have it idling if I recall. You just don't want to drain your battery as it takes about an hour. Easy as it comes to do.

NOT reasonable. If your vehicle is 2007-2009, disk can be ordered on-line from MBUSA for $249 and takes a little less than one hour to install yourself. Often you can find someone selling the actual disk on EBay.

Caution-- read the Ebay listing carefully. Some will claim to be selling a BACKUP version which is an illegal copy that may work, let your conscience be your guide.

Others will sell the actual official disk which will come with the original case.

B sure that you get version 15.0 which is the latest and Mercedes claims there will be no further updates.

Agreed

I put this in earlier but want to be clear after reading that last post-
Your version is NTG 3 I believe - verify this by a simple google search first.

Start with that info and then find the newest map which could be 15.0 but you have to have the right version for your car. If you buy a NTG 2.5 with a X.0 map that won't work. Also if you buy a version NTG4 with a 15.0 map that won't work either.

This really is a simple process on your model car but I thought the version and map number info might be confusing based on the last couple of posts.

i actually saw a recent map for your car on eBay pretty cheap and it is DIY for sure.

Good luck

The Navigation PIN does not prevent you from doing it yourself. A dealer can provide you with a PIN however you do after purchase it as it is a billable part What it does is associate the cost with the PIN other than the Navi update itself. This way to deter "illegal" copies of Navi discs or discs being passed around.

Nav

Thanks for the help scb71. I found the NTG3 v15, 2016. Can the update be done with a trickle charger? Will that provide enough juice during the update / install?

You are welcome. Regarding the trickle charger - probably but cannot confirm. Just open the garage door and start the car if you have any concerns.

I got mine through Ebay in the US. Maybe try Ebay Australia? Or find someone selling their used copies
