How to remove back of front seats to access controls

Can anyone out there post a video or shoot one of how exactly to take off the back of the front seats to access the controls. I'm having some issues adjusting things on the seats and then the number going back to 0 on the Comand unit and want to look for wiring issues. I've seen how to take the S Class seat back off but not the CL (and they are different). Thanks!

I assume your problem is with the seat adjustments made via the comand video screen and not the controls on the door.

Most likely cause of your seat settings returning to zero is an air leak. Both front seats share a common air supply for seat adjustments. A leak in the system will cause both seats to fail. I had a leak in first the driver seat and then several months later in the passenger seat. he passenger seat failed in the last month of my seven year aftermarket extended warranty. The aftermarket warranty paid my dealer almost $5000 to replace the passenger seat cushion which was deemed to be not easily repairable; My symptoms after both failures were I would adjust a seat setting (such as lumbar support) and then a couple of seconds the setting would return to zero. There have been a couple of W221 members who were able to disassemble their seats and then use a hot iron to seal an air bladder leak.

Yes you are correct. I'd love to be another success story of someone repairing this themselves as $5000 is literally more than I paid for the car Also the heated seat isn't working (although the lights on the door are). So basically I'd like to get in there and take a look around and see if there are any connections I can repair.

Hello @07CL550Benz ,

I know that it has been a while since you started this thread, and I was wondering if you figured out a solution to this?

I've the same exact car, CL550 2007.

Thanks in advance!

Yeah I ended up taking my entire seat apart, it's much easier to work on it if you take the seat out of the car. It really isn't that hard. But if you don't want to do that you'll have to get underneath and undo the strap that goes underneath from the rear to the middle of the bottom of the cushion. Then you can fold up the flap and there should be 2 screws on each side that you take out and then push the back cover down and it will come off.

I see the elastic strap that stretches under the seat...but how do you get ahold of it to remove it, or eventually reinstall it? Various parts are blocking access.

Yah, I watched that video, but the S is a little different--the two screws at the base are already exposed. There is an elastic strap on the CL that extends under the seat that hooks near the front of the seat, underneath. WIS is not helpful either, other than saying to unhook the strap which seems impossible to access. Even if I could get it off, hooking it back on seems equally impossible. I could take the seat out I suppose. I don't see a YouTube video specifically for the CL216, though.

On the plus side, I just fixed the clock malfunction issue w/ software posted in the S forum

Raise the seat. Feel for the strap and grope forward. Took me about 5 seconds to feel for where the strap is hooked. There's another video on YouTube (I think the channel is "MGuy") and he shows how to do it on the C216.

I'm going through this now to find my leak. My problem is worse because my driver seat locks in the forward position and the repair shop told me that I need to replace the seat back ($1500+). Instead, I found a beautiful set of matching front seats, in the right color from a CL600--so they have the V12 badge and the exclusive leather. So, it'll be a simple swap (I hope). The downside is now I will have to store a front seat set that I'll never use (again, I hope).

I did manage to get the elastic strap off. My solution was reaching around the back with my right hand, and squeezing my left fingers under the black cylinder. Getting it back on will be trickier. My new seat cover came--it is rare one uses the word bargain with MB parts, but $230 for a new leather seat cover?!? Yes please. Other colors were 5x as much, but for some reason black w/ perforations was only $230.

How hard was removing the seat? Just a few bolts, and unplugging the hoses and connections?
