BlueEfficiency (Stop/Start) not working

Hi all, the stop/start functionality on my CL500 (2014) has stopped working - any ideas what it might be? The drive option is set to Eco.
Also, I have seen on YouTube people stating that using the start/stop functionality is actually detrimental to the cars Starter Motor - how true is that claim and is there any real fuel efficiency to be made when just in normal traffic (at a red light etc)?
