2005 CL65 AMG 2000miles for $80K?
A friend of mine called me up and told me he wants me to go 50/50 with him on this. (OF COURSE I AM NOT DOING THAT......... it will only lead to serious fighting..........)
$80K for a 2005 CL65 with 2K miles on the clock........... supposedly mint condition.......
$110K drop from brand new?
Brad
Next year they will most likely be in the $60,000's.......talk about a bargain!

The CL65 dropped so fast for several reasons- V-12 TT, the Bentley GT, the launch of the new CL and the fact that the CL65 was released at the very end of its product cycle.
Look at the price of a mid 90's BMW 750il.........they are cheaper to buy now than a 74 BMW 2002!
This is why you lease these bad boys... even if the payment if $2,500+/mo. (which it would be at least that). Is still worth it, let MB USA take the hit, and use their money

But the truth is that the 65's at least in the CL format are tanking in value.

If you were to purchase this vehicle. At $185,000 @ 7% interest (which would be with A++ credit). You would have a 60month payment of $3,663.22. After 36mo. of paying that payment, your payoff would STILL be $81,818... Just about what that car is worth TODAY!!!!!! Imagine what it will be worth if it had 50k miles on it, and no warranty, like at the end of a lease term.....
Even if you had a $3,500/mo lease nut on this car. You would be WAY ahead.... ANd you get to drive it, enjoy it, put miles on, and walk away with no payoff..
Leasing is not the best option for every car. But it usually is for Mercedes. They depreciate faster than you can pay on them..

Since you want to use exact figures, here's my reply to you.
You used the full price of the car, so I'll do the same. To lease a CL65 at msrp, the payment will be more like $4500 plus tax. That's assuming a residual value of $60,000 or 32% of the original price with $0 down and 36 months. Now the total amount of payments is approx. $162,000.
Even if you finance it, then end up selling in 3 years, you will have made about $130,000 in payments, then have a payoff of $81,000, according to your numbers. Let's say you end up selling the car for $60,000, you are still $21,000 short. Add that to $130,000 and your total cost over the 3 years is $151,000.
That's still lower than what it would've cost you to lease. I'm not taking in to account any business write-offs one may be able to receive from leasing, just strictly giving the numbers. So, I don't perceive leasing to be better for cars of this price.

I'll be out of my lease by next summer and If I was considering a new CLS63 w/030 option ($110K to 115K msrp) or a modded 2006 CLS55 ($75-80K plus $15000 worth of mods), then a 2005/6 CL65 next year might be appealing.
Or I might just say F__K it and mod the crap out of the E55...it's different every day I get on this forum...I LOVE THE era of hp and torque we live right now!!!!!
Sorry to break it to you guys but thats what those cars are bringing at the auctions. I have a business associate who paid $180,000 plus and recently went to our local MB dealership and they offered $73,000. His payoff was $150,000............
huh?
are there really people buying $180k cars on installments - to be that upside down? i thot these cars were bot either as cash purchases or corp leases. and if it were a lease, no business guy in his right mind would lease a car that had a 32% residual after 3 yrs.
that being said, 1 yr old CL65 for $80k seems like a pretty good buy...i heard last month there was a CL600 sport w/ 30k that went for mid-$40k recently at an auction.

The thing is that they were introduced at the end of the product cycle, so a lot of it has to do with them being the old models. Try getting an '07 S65 for less than MSRP...

By the way a CL65 had a residual in the 50-60% range last year, not 32%.

The residual value for a 2007 S65 is ~28% on leasecompare. As we all know the 07 is a brand new model. I highly doubt MB financial would give the old outgoing CL65 a residual of 50-60%, even if it was last year.
In any case, I'm just making the point that MB financial is not so naive as to lose tens of thousands of dollars on these deals. The high depreciation is factored into the high price you're paying on these leases.

Let me assure you that the numbers I gave you are very close.......as to MB's new residuals that is due to them realising that they were losing money with their old rates! I'll get the actual residuals for the 2005 CL65.
