Just bought an 05 CL65. Advice on wheels please.

I just bought a 2005 CL65 a few days ago. It has the stock 19" AMG wheels but I'd like to change thems for 20". The stock size is 245/40-19 and 275/35-19. I was thinking of 255/35-20 and 285 or295/30-20. What do you guys think? Will my speedometer be too off and how do you think the handling will be affected. I'm going with forged wheels so they actually may be a bit lighter then the stock. What say you???

Thanks

Larry I upgraded mine to HRE 843R's but I have since got bored of them and swapped them out with 549R's. You will have a tough time getting 295's unless you keep your car at stock height. The spindle on the 65 runs long so big lipped wheels are also out in the rear- max is 2.50 inches from what I hear. The 843R's are 255x35 and 285x30x20.

The plus sizing should keep your speedo within reason. I really like the Modulare wheel set up that Peter at Wheelexperts supports. Of course you cant go wrong with HRE's either. There are ton of decent wheels out there now and most of the forged ones will be lighter than stock.

Here are my old wheel pics:

Thanks Vic for the reply. I may go with Maya MRS in chrome or anthrocite. I like a wheel that will take the Mercedes Cap and the TPMS sensors without a problem. Here are some pictures of my new ride.

Love the new ride, the Maya's ... are they forged cause if not they are tanks (35lbs if 20"s)???
Oh HRE's take the TPMS- had the second hole drilled by them. Ill post pics once I get my car back.

I see the original owner put the front plate on---arrgghhh you can always get bumper plugs is you choose.

Car is out of California so the front plate bracket came with the car. I bought bumper plugs already and I was going to put them in but decided against it. I'm sure there is a ring around the plate holder that will need to be buffed out. I saw a cool AMG plate at a local car accessory store and decided to put it on. I actually like the way it looks. I just need to drill two more holes into the plate bracket to make the plate flush.

I love this car!!! It is so comfortable to drive. Will the 20" wheels slow me down at all noticeably? I doubt it but I just want to confirm this.

By the way I tried to post these pictures in the picture thread and it won't let me because it says these pictures are being used in this thread? How do I post these pictures again?

The 20's wont slow you down too much with all that torque IMO. But going up an inch in wheel diameter and adding weight as well is not something I would do.

As for the pics, you just need to right click on the pic and copy the properties into the new post and use the image input button I think.

What do you think if I keep 19" wheels but go a bit wider. Would the speedometer be significantly off if I went from 245/40's to 255/40's and 275/35's to 285/35's? I could keep the stock wheels and it would give me a bit more rubber on the ground. What do you think?

if you go with wider wheels then it should even out...that little of difference will barely have an effect on the speedo.

Tire Rack or Discount Tire has a matrix that predicts the changes in speedo by tire height and width.

I actually like the stock wheels on this car. I kept mine on and have the same ride. The gunmetal looks great with the color of the car..Just a thought

I agree the wheels are nice but mine are a bit discolored due to the previous owner using a chemical to shine his tires. All four rims have a decent amount of road rash also. I guess I could re-powder coat the wheels and get the rash fixed but if I can get a good deal on wheels then I'll just get new ones. Also the stock wheels are very heavy and IMO too thin. I would like lighter and wider wheels if possible. I think 285's in the rear should be the minimum. I don't know why AMG went with 275's for such a powerful car? 295's-305's would be great but I'm not sure if they would fit well.

I would stay stock as the 19s look perfect but understand your reasoning.

Fast cars in general....
I wasn't planning upgrades but I just couldn't pass on a deal & looks!!!

I wasn't going to change the rims but after I saw the I-Forged fabulous wheels from one of our shipment, I've decided to put one on. My coworker wanted put one on his CLS55, but he decided to spend $$$ on renntech upgrades for now. The wheels are 20X8.5 front and 20X10 rear I-Forged Fabulous model w/ gun-metal spoke and chromed lip and they look incredible in person (refer to pics below although they have chrome spoke). If any one of you guys want a set at a great price, email or pm me. By the way, what size tire should I go with, I'm thinking 255/30 front 295/30 rear. What do you think? Gregory

Hi,
I'm looking for a 5 spoke wheel that shows the brakes. Also I would like a wheel that will hold the Mercedes Cap. I don't think the I-Forged will hold the cap but I have heard they are good wheels for the price. I'm interested if any of the I-Forged fit my criteria. Let me know. Also post pics if you put them on your car. Welcome to the forum!!!!
