If you want to compare a M5/6 to a CL 63 and both have same published 0-60 times and you believe that the M is faster off the line but they both have same 0-60 then I would say that the CL63 out accelerates the M >30 mph and all the way up.

And you'd be mistaken.
Ms strong point is higher speed acceleration. AMGs are stupid fast off the line.
A CL63 wont beat up on an M5 or M6 at highway speed.

ieb... as a fellow AMG owner and driver, i ask you sincerely to shut the fu*k up, you're making the rest of us look like cu*ts because we associate ourselves with you. Yes, i bought an AMG instead of an M, and no, i didnt do it because it was faster or the better performer. Though for me the cars are so close that it doesnt make a difference, I bought it because it matched my needs more and I am truly in love with it. But please, dont come in here and bash the Ms, I have a lot of respect for any M5/6. Just do yourself a favor and change your handle and try to grow up. If you try hard we might not make fun of you again. Thank you

The M5 and M6 are completely different animals than the AMG cars. Not better. Not worse. Different. And that's even without taking personal taste into consideration. If you're talking about pure competitive performance (handling beyond the edge of the envelope) the M's are - and continue to be - faster. If you're talking about 1/4 mile times, the AMG cars are typically stronger. If you're talking about comfortably driving on highways at ridiculous speeds, the AMG is probably at an advantage. I don't own an M anymore because I now prefer the more "heavy" feel of the MB for my type of use. Both AMGs and Ms are awesome. Only somebody with some real self confidence issues would try to trash either one.

Very well said. The only thing I disagree with is that I prefer to be in an M at the higher three figure speeds due to the under car aero aids which make it very controllable and tied down. However AMG seem to have become proactive with their newer models (CL63, forthcoming SL63 MCT) and added some very serious rear diffusers that will bring them right in line when traveling the bad side of 150. And of course, while the Ms can be very comfortable on the highways you mention with their EDC, the AMGs are even more cosseting. You're speaking absolute sense with regard to competitive performance vs drags and the plusses minus of each brand. It is indeed a win-win situation either direction you choose to go in.

I’m not sorry about anything that I said. Hubris was never a strong suit of mine. I started this thread as an experiment. I was thinking that an awful lot of what goes on here is related to effective marketing and that the thin skin that some BMW people have is the result of subliminally implanted suggestions of inferiority.

I spoke with the salesperson that sold me my car at FMW, which also sells BMW. He confirmed my thought that BMW drivers trade “up” to MB but seldom do MB drivers switch to BMW.

Think about the MB commercials that show some middle aged man who probably makes around $150K thinking back to when he was a child in awe about someday aspiring to own an Mercedes-Benz.

So what I really think is:

1. German cars are all great. German mechanical engineering is the best in the world and anyone who has traveled there knows how wonderful their toilets are. German food is worst in the world.
2. There are plenty of cars in the $50-70K range that outperform all German cars including the 997tt.
3. I don’t understand why anyone other than a totally committed anglophile would but a DB9 or other British car that looks like an Italian when they could but an Italian car.
4. Why am I spending so much time here when I should be out making deals so that I can buy more cars?

Low end M car owner chiming in here....

Have driven AMG's and other M's. Bottom line to me is personal preference. There are some things that are generally (but not always) true IMHO:
1) AMG's typically have more low end torque than M's and better acceleration 0-60 and quarter mile
2) M's are usually lighter than the corresponding AMG model
3) M's have a reputation for better handling but probably 90% of the owners of both marques won't be willing or able to utilize the difference especially on the street (and rightfully so).
4) M5's and M6's are typically stronger "up top" than the corresponding AMG models (AMG 65 models of course shatter that at a significantly higher price point)
5) M's need to be reved to redline to extract the most performance which is a trait I personally prefer. Lately though low end torque is appealing to me more and more. Getting old or getting wise?

I think overall we are fortunate to have these different options and the competition between both just improves the next generation of vehicles...

P.s. Re SMG: My cousin has a M6 vert with SMGIII. He lent it to me for 24 hours a while back. AFTER getting all the settings set how I wanted it, I loved the gear box. It's the first performance car I've driven that I would prefer the clutchless version over the one with a clutch (and I'm a diehard traditional manual driver)

I know a bunch of people who have left MB and bought a BMW.

This is all pure nonsense and childish.

Your "dealer" must be into drugs not cars beacuse he's smoking crack.
Here's my car progression:
-2004 M3
-2006 CLS55
-2006 M6
-2008 CLK63 Black

And if BMW comes out with something more compelling than their current offerings I'll go back.

Other than the unavailable GTR and the Z06 what cars in that price range can even run with a 997 Turbo?

Leave ieb alone!!! So what if he insults not only BMW drivers, but current MB drivers as well. His delusions of grandeur keep him warm at night. If you shatter them, then he will be left with nothing. So...let him keep his comfort in his Stuart Smalley-esque daily affirmation..."I am rich enough, I am pseudo-smart enough and gosh darn it.. people envy me!!!"

The M5/M6 are crazy highway cars............. and the only encounter I've had with one was with a beautiful black chick that flipped me off when I pulled up next to her to play........................................... I'm still not over the trauma of that day.

I remember that story actually. I'd give you a run if you were around here. Wouldn't be able to hold a candle to your K3 but I could try.
