A Cayenne S challenged me for 15 minutes

last night. He pulled up on the side of me like ten times revving his engine, waiting on me to to step on it.

I confess-I had been drinking last night so I let it go, although I was so tempted, oh so tempted.

I'm actually proud of myself realizing that had I gotten pulled over that it may have been more than a demonstration of speed tix. Dont know what I woulda blew but it wasnt worth it. I was also on my way to pick up a first time date that I had been dying to get together with. I figured a date with CHP would have really sucked.

Guess what - A mile down the road, just around the bend, it just so happened a CHP squad car sitting on the side of the freeway filling out paperwork...YIKES! I gently cruised passed him with my heart beating feeling guilty about the mere thought of contemplating the race just a few seconds ago.

This morning I was trying to put into monetary terms what having gotten caught last night woulda cost me...

DUI
Demonstration Speed Tix
Insurance
Attorney
Impound
Bail

Realistically, what do you think the damage would have been net?

Damn, being responsible-Im getting more like my father every day!

Actually enjoy seeing guys rapidly pass by me on fwy in my underpowered CL63 (I only use left lane for passing and selectively choose sections of familiar fwys to drive more briskly)....have often found others' demonstration of speed to be a useful, free radar detector

Will often see 65s and 599s (and CL63 030s) in early AM commutes on the fast-flowing 280 fwy from SF-SiliconValley....interestingly, over the yrs, have never seen anyone who commutes via new, 500hp+ cars seem to be trying to prove anything to anyone else on fwy....these guys often drive briskly, esp btwn clumps of traffic, but very safely in terms of following dists and lane changes....seems like it's often some 10yo, <$10K car/SUV that chooses to cruise at 100+MPH in left lane of fwy (even if other lanes wide open), oblivious to traffic and most else....and that type of driver in the 10yo car will also cluelessly tailgate @80+MPH (while chatting on cell and eating breakfast...staying obese is a full-time job) in dense fwy traffic....Darwinian selection on many levels....

Worst case scenario of any street race...something goes wrong by either driver or by an innocent bystander and major injuries/death result....am not an attorney, but would suspect the driver of a $150K+ car is likely facing felony vehicular manslaughter/aggrav assault charges and jail time, in addition to signif civil litigation/liability....needless to say, street racing is a moronic risk/reward bet usually placed by those w/little to lose in life....

it was a clear freeway with no traffic at 11pm

but you are right, anything could have happened. I wouldnt have called it a "roadrace" but at most a ticket getting drag for 15-20 secs of Hwy 24 just past the Caldecott in Orinda heading toward Walnut Creek.

One thing for sure, now is right about the time I would be bailing out with a myriad of court dates to come.

You have a very valid point about injury though. If someone were to have gotten hurt, any lawyer would have drooled over the car involved and dug into where it came from.

Exactly, I drove a ML the other day on a commuter freeway for 15 minutes, and I was seriously afraid. I thought the car was gonna flip over if I change lanes. I barely managed the speed limit, I don't know how people in pick-ups and jeeps drive that fast.

How is that responsible? Why not stay the F off the road when you're drunk?
And why would you even be tempted to race a 340 or 380 HP truck?

He was guessing that he would have received a DUI if stopped.
And the fact he had an urge to race a slow truck shows he was not thinking clearly. AMG and booze are an awful combination.

Evidently the tragedy of a dui hasn't hit close enough to home yet.

A few years ago my wife bought me an "over the counter" breathalizer and it sat in my closet until this spring...

Needless to say the first night I used it after three (3) beers on an empty stomach after work I blew a .08 (at the legal limit)! I am about 5'10" and weigh 180. That was scary knowing so little alcohol in a social setting put me right at the edge. Interestingly enough, the other guys I were with all blew, too. They were less than me prior to dinner, but after dinner - and many more drinks by each of them - they blew. We all predictied our BAC. After dinner I predicted about a .04 and I blew close to it. I am not going to bore you with details but despite how much each person drank everyone was within .02 of where they thought they were from a BAC perspective (the most lubed-up was a .16!) At any rate, the old saying is "if you think you are too drunk to drive", you probably are.

I strongly recommend you have one of these just to "gut check" and know your limits. I had suspected that it would not take too many but good gravy; 3 drinks!

Also, the claim is that it is within .002 accuracy. The name of it is a "Alcohawk".

You're not an official sponsor- mods ban him!

Sounds a good tool. I will never drink more than two beers if driving, and I prefer to keep it at one or zero. If I've had two, I behave my self and drive like a saint. Now when the taxis about there's no reasons to stop them beers until well into double figures.

ouch, looks like you got what you asked for Understand that almost a 1/3 of the people in the US has lost someone or is close to someone that has lost someone due to DWI/Drunk Drivers, so understand the lashing. The matter is not taken lightly. It doesn't matter if you drive an $$$ benz or a honda civic, it is a problem and no one is excluded.

to answer you question:
"what do you think the damage would have been net?"
your life
your dates life
the life of the cheyyenne porshe driver
a straight trip to HELL
... I can keep going

side note:
Always never drink before a big date, especially in a nice cl63
