2.75" or 3" Pipes?

A friend of mine bought an 07' CL600 but didn't like the exhaust tone, then he
got an AMG mufflers but it's still to quit for him.

He likes the tone I have on my E55 AMG. My set up is no cats no res. 3" with an X pipes and stock mufflers.

The question is :

1- remove just the res. and replace it with an x pipe to get a descent tone?

2- remove the cats and res. and get an X pipe ?

3- Go for a 3" with X pipe and stock muf.

TIA

haters crazy
The CL600 will be quieter than your E55 due to the turbos, they act as mufflers. If he wants it to sound close to yours he will need the same setup. But again I dont think it will be as loud

I would stay with the stock 2.75 (70mm) and repalce cats with race cats, then add X pipe , remove resonators and mufflers.. Just weld the muffler tips onto the end of the 2.75 pipe..

Understand that a V12 will never sound the same as a V8.

IIRK, the stock CL600 has a X type pipe stock. Since he has changed to the AMG mufflers the next thing I would suggest is to remove the resonators and see how he likes it. Make sure to use the same size tube as stock when replacing the resonators and that the tubing from the engine fits the new tubing properly with no sharp edges INSIDE the pipe that would hinder flow.

If that is still not enough and if it is legal where you live you can remove the catalysts and replace the oxygen sensors after the cats with simulators (probably just what you did).

Exhaust systems are just like a musical instrument and each bend, transition, pipe size change and length variance will change the sound. Experimentation is usually required when trying to "tune" the system to a specific sound quality.
