Aren't those the hi-beams?

no, that's what i thought at first, but when i turned the hi beams on, the low beams got brighter or the angle is different. the inner lamps remain dark.

These are the Infra Red emitters for night vision. They emit infra red light which can only be seen by the night vision camera.

wow, that's interesting. thanks Steve. So for those that are not equipped with night view assist, the lamps would serve no functions, merely for cosmetic purpose?

I think they would come on only when you pull the handle to you for a passing high beam, no?

So I checked an online manual on a 2009 CL63, it indicates that it is IR emitter (for Night
View Assist) using H11 (55W) bulbs. Also on the manual under the same section, it is a "high beam flasher lamp.

Whether or not it turns on I was unable to find. Try turning up your headlamp switch all the way right and then turn on your high beam (pull the stalk to hold high beam) and see if it lights up. However since you mentioned your low beam got brighter (bi-xenons) then I don't really know.

My 07 550 low beam also brightens up but the inner lamp also lights up, it is not a projection style housing like the one pictured though.
