Exclamation Frequently starting and shutting off your engine...Now acceptable?

I've always tried to avoid turning on and off the engines in all my vehicles as much as possible to avoid excessive wear. Now we're well into the use of auto start-stop systems that shut off the motor at traffic lights to save fuel!

So my question is, if the motor is already warmed up, it would seem to indicate that frequent starting and stopping is perfectly fine, what with OEM's featuring those systems in many new cars..

Thoughts?

I suspect the starter motor and the gear it meshes with have been modified to withstand a significantly larger number of cycles without wearing out. I would not advise turning off the engine of a vehicle not designed for this at every intersection due to the possibility of wearing out the flywheel gear and the the starter motor.

Actually the problem is not the starter and flywheel wearing out- it is the hot oil draining to the crank case and the engine starting dry-ish after that. This is what wears out the engine on start- lack of oil pressure. This still holds true for all non- start/ stop engines.

New start/stop engines have provisions to prevent oil from draining as well as supply oil very quickly (oil dump reservoirs/ baffles on top of heads) somtheymare less prone to wear upon start.
