CL55 or CL65? That is the question...
Hey everyone, totally new to this site and I am hoping that with all the the knowledge of the Mercedes on here that someone can give me some advice!
I am looking at either a 2005-2006 Mercedes CL55 AMG, or a 2005 CL65 AMG.
I live In Vancouver Canada however it seems impossible to find either of these cars in abundance so my picking is somewhat slim, so I have began by search State-side.
I went and looked at a 2006 CL55 AMG black on black with 62k miles on it. Ran great and pulled hard like an AMG should. I have also looked at a 2005 CL65 AMG with ruffly the same mileage, I believe it equals 63k. The asking on the CL55 is $28,900 and for the CL65 just a little more at $35,000.
My question is which is overall better, sure its not quite apples to oranges but for an extra $6.100 is it worth it to go for one of the quickest cars on the road? In terms of reliability is one better than the other? What kind of questions should I be asking the dealers on these cars? I'm assuming a warranty is a no brainer for cars of this caliber... Are these cars good for everyday driving? I don't want a car that just sits in my garage and only goes out once a week.
Any advice would be awesome guys, and I thank you in advance.

i have a 2004 cl600. it is my daily driver. it requires more maintenance than a normal car and is more expensive to own, but is pretty reliable. personally i like the smoothness of the v12. definitely get a warranty!!!

Jesse,
I went through the same thing 2 years ago. This was my logic for going with the CL65 vs CL55. There were only 10 CL65's sold in all of Canada for 2005. Now I bet there is maybe 15 total in the country. They are so rare. The power is unbelievable. Sure you can get the 55 and it will be cheaper to buy, maintain and mod. Parts are cheaper. To see a 65 of any sorts on the streets is a rare site. Finally, just so you know, a fully optioned out CL65 in 2005 was $274000 in Canada. That's exotic car territory. I guess that's why it devours exotics on the street. Its the ulitmate sleeper IMO. Goodluck on your decision.

R.K,
Thanks for the advice. If you don't mind me asking what did you pay a few years back for your CL65? How has it been overall in terms of maintance for you? ANy major issues? Did you buy private or Dealership? How many miles are on it? A beautiful car none the less, do you have any pictures? I'd love to see it!
Cheers,
Jesse

Jesse,
I bought the car for a very good price. Less than you're paying for yours. Mine had 72000miles on it. I bought it from a dealership in Quebec and had them ship it here. Its originally a Florida car. They just got the Canadian import papers on it and I bought it. I don't know if the dealership messed up the ABC pump or the train guys but the car came off the train with a blown ABC pump. I replaced that, 90% of the hoses, oil change, belts and most recently brake pads. I don't daily drive the car. Its currently parked for the winter. Here are some pics of it after I installed the lowering module and custom wheels:

That's funny because most people on this forum mock my wheel selection and think it doesn't look good. 95% of the other people on all of the other forums I belong to love this look. I guess its because of the high end quality wheels and me treating the CL like its supposed to be and not a honda civic. But who knows.

Whether or not it's worth it is up to you. For that difference in price and given the rarity of 65 AMGs in Canada you may be tempted. Don't forget to take into account the tyre shredding capabilities of these 65s, higher insurance, etc. etc.
For some people a 55 AMG is more than enough car, but if you're an AMG enthusiast you need that power in your life.
I've got a bi-turbo, V12 S600 so it's no slouch and when a local dealership had a CL65 AMG for sale I went and had a look. I took it out for a few hours and whilst it was a novelty to have that much power I felt the times it'd be useful over my 600 would be small. For that reason I didn't go for it, and have ruled out 65 AMGs for my next purchase.

CL55, CL600, CL65 all have potential to be greater, but in stock form which is top of its game? I used to have a 03 CL55 and after 2 years I asked myself why I didn't go for the best. Eventually I did, trade 03 Cl55 for 05 CL65 and paid an extra $4k for 3 years 36K mi warranty that cover everything. Now I that lingering thought of what could, what if, why didn't, I should have is gone. Peace of mind is more satisfying and outweigh the extra money spent. Get the CL65

I thought the same when buying a 65. Thought that a 600 with a tune would do it! I'm very glad I paid the extra for the 65 and never regret it. I may not use the power all the time, but knowing I can smoke pretty much anything on the road is well worth it to me.

that seems like a great price for a warranty. who is the co. and how long ago did you get it?
