Transmission knock
I have a 2006 CL500 with 160k miles. Recently it was parked at decline facing forward. It sat for a few hours and when I went to move it, reverse would not engage, put it in drive an nothing. Put it back in reverse and revved it a little higher and it engaged with a loud thunk. Against my better judgement I drove it at low speed to see if sound would go away and it did once I was above 30-40 mph. Proceeded on the highway and the car was shifting fine and no noticible noise. It seemed once I reduced speed to under 40 mph the sound was more apparent, although shifting fine. I inspected the flex discs and they seemed fine. Sent it to the dealer for diags and they said, "something in the trans, gonna need a new one" $5,500. Any ideas, could it be low fluid?
Lower speed pretty much means lower gear.
I would take it to a good transmission shop and have it rebuilt. This is a known 5-speed tranny that is shared with a lot of chryslers. Shops know them and can rebuild them for far less. The dealer is quoting you a new tranny.
The 7-speed is not easily serviceable states- side.
