Coil Packs failed, can I make it home?

Coil packs failed while out at the lake. CEL and very low power. I'm about 50 miles from home...can I drive it home? Any possible damage as a result of limping it back home or is it time for the long haul wrecker?

Not a good idea to run car for this time period with a bad coil pack.
Besides sending raw fuel into the cat system you will be washing the cyl of oil residue. Especially if the injector is still pulsing as it does not know the cyl coil pack is not firing.
Even if I am totally wrong with the thought, it would be more safe to get a coil pack from anywhere possible to get you home, OEM or a cheap parts store is better than limping home.

Thanks for the reply. Raw fuel into the cats would be bad for sure. Looks like the flatbed is coming.

Just a thought, check under the hood for rodent damage, was a issue a few months back where an owner had parked the car for a while and some squirrel or mouse got under the hood and ate some wiring for the coil pack or injector, not sure which but worth a shot, especially near the back fire wall.

I mean you could drive on them, but yes the cats would be destroyed, it didn't matter for me since I was planning to swap the exhaust system when I was running into that same issue at the time.

Sometimes if you cycle the key and shut the car down for some time the misfire will go away and will not present itself until you step on the gas hard and boost comes in. I have been caught in this situation and have driven home a good number of miles.

Those cats are going to glow red with all that raw fuel and your going end up damaging 02s as well as fouling the plugs etc..... list goes on ... much safer and legit way is to tow it . Goodluck

Car is safe in the garage. New coil packs and plugs ordered from AutoZone. Got a 20% discount on my order and free Fedex shipping..out the door for $1500 with tax. Let the wrenching begin!

What is the warranty on the coil packs from auto zone ?

I know OReilly offers a lifetime warranty and the part you get is the oem mb part

Lifetime warranty from AutoZone also. OEM part. Took me a little while to find it on their website also. I selected my type of vehicle first and then entered "ignition coil" in the search box. Fast shipping, OEM part, and a 20% discount for the online purchase.

FYI, I also replaced the rubber seal and gasket on the turbo coolant pipes while I was in there. Parts were cheap...like $5.00. With all that stuff out of the way already, it just made sense to do it. Both of my seals looked wasted after 69K miles. Only one of them had begun to seep a little, but I replaced them both. Best to do it while you have the thing apart.

If you do this, take special care in the order of reassembly as you replace the bolts for the intercooler piping that run below the coil pack. One and only one of the three bolts that holds the lines to the block ALSO holds the lower rear portion of the coil pack. Seems like you should bolt it all back on before installing the coil pack....uuuhhh no. Coil Pack will not fully seat with this bolt installed, and you have to remove whole enchilada....ask me how I know!

With the DIY posted on the M275 V12TT engine section of MBWorld this job was time consuming, but surprisingly easy with the proper tools. 6/8/10 12-point sockets and a 8mm 12-point swivel ratcheting wrench are must haves.

Is it the duralast ignition coils? Are these the OEM part from Autozone. Both sides for less than $1200 if these are OEM sounds like a deal too good to be true. They do say lifetime on them so it might be worth trying.

Yes, they say Duralast coil packs on the AutoZone website, but that is just what is printed on the box it comes in. The coil packs themselves are OEM Temik branded, with the OEM part numbers, and are the latest "upgraded" version/part numbers, etc.
