2012 CL63 Coupe: Can weak Battery trigger Engine Light?

Good afternoon. Just had my engine light come on yesterday. Car is running fine. I have a sneaking suspicion that a weak battery may have caused this (or at least I'm hoping so). The battery has seemed to be on its way out for a few months; hesitation when turning over but has never failed to start. Coupla questions for the board:
  • Is it possible that the engine light could be triggered as a result of dying battery?
  • Is it recommended that I purchase a code reader and if so, which one?
  • Does $350 for the Bosch battery seem correct? Seemed high to me, but the Delco was about $300.

At this point, I'm thinking of replacing the battery (which will also clear the code). If light comes back on, I'll know my hunch was wrong. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Funny thing is, I'm replacing my auxiliary battery right now for somewhat the same reason. Old (5 years), tired battery is triggering a bunch of weird faults in all the car body systems simply because it won't retain a charge after a day or two.

Fun!

You can easily check the charge condition of the starter battery in the engine compartment with a voltmeter or via the steering wheel menu with the engine stopped. Figure 12 volts or less could constitute a worn-out battery. If you're really scientific, you can have a shop load test it while it's in the car.

Thanks for the response. Had a MB expert scan it and code came back as "Fine Evap Leak". Looks like I'll be scheduling a visit to Mercedes of Edison next month. Hope that finding the leak is easy and inexpensive. By the way, I replaced my auxiliary battery a year ago. About $160 for the MB aux Batt, and my own labor. I found it very difficult to put the rear panel back in place until I removed the trunk floor panel. Once that panel is out, rear panel goes back in much easier.

My main battery still has some juice left in it. Should last another year.
