Guys,

First off thanks for the great info on how to diagnose, and change the bearing saving me the $900 Benz wanted for the clutch itself.

I removed the Nachi bearing # 45bg07s5dl and was able to find a the same bearing. East Bearing Co. had 3 of them and I bought them. $55.03 plus tax. I've got one for sale is anyone is interested.

Not to burst your bubble, but the bearing will not help with the clutch being worn out. I had my bearing go out, but before that the notorious belt chirp was still there, I changed the bearing like you have done, but the belt chirp was still there. I replaced with a new clutch kit, $750 shop price, and chirp was gone for good.

What was the part number for the clutch kit? I was speaking to my cousin who works at Mercedes service and they were clueless of what I was talking about, they said they thought the chirp was cool, lol. I told them you could replace the clutch with a 2006 model, my CL55 is 2003.

TY for the reply. I don't have a belt chirp, I was driving and noticed the car was quite slow, opened the hood when I got home and was grease all over the underside of the cover and the bearing was missing the front seal.

I am still wondering what could have caused this besides a random bearing failure.

Part number is 1130900044. Guaranteed your chirp will go away and your car will pull harder. Besides the bearings going bad, the clutch wears out like a clutch in a manual transmission.
It’s really not a random failure; bearings go out in wheel hubs, its wear and tear. The same thing happened with my car, I heard a rough noise from the engine compartment when i opened the hood there were plastic pieces from the retainer of the bearing.

I recalled driving by Nachi here in Indianapolis. I found a contact email and sent a message regaring the SC clutch bearing. Hopefully they will return my message with a source for the bearing although it might be a long shot. If they respond, I will contact you.

I had an 03 e55 and now have an 05 cl55 and both have/had the S/C Chirp. I have been told by 3 dealership and people on the board that the chirp isn't signs of a warn clutch at all. It does not mean that you need a SC clutch. I actually like the chirp myself. If my clutch was worn and chirping then I dont see how I would have been able to run a 12.1 1/4 mile in the e55.

For what it is worth, I agree that the SC clutch chirp as no effect on engine performance and you can choose to live with it. I did so for about a year on my 03 SL55. Unfortunately, after that year, my SC clutch bearing failed. Maybe a coincidence, but it seems to me the less than perfectly smooth clutch engagement (chirp) could have led to additional wear and tear on the bearing. I replaced the SC clutch and the old clutch looked very worn compared to the brand new clutch assembly. The chirp was gone after the install of the new SC clutch and engagement seemed smoother as well. I am running an oversized pulley and it could have contributed to the bearing failure.

It might be prudent to have a look at your clutch bearing from time to time. This is what you don’t want to see.

To change it is pretty easy. IIRC

1) Impact gun to break loose the big bolt in the center, it's CCW to loosen.
2) Press bearing out
3) Press new bearing in
4) Use strap wrench to hold outside of bearing and torque bolt back. (don't remember the spec)

The rest of it is the same as changing a belt.

Same thing happened to me. Tech said he had never seen that happen on a 55k motor, but seems relatively common here on the boards. Definitely think the pulley is not helping the matter and may even be the cause. I had to get a new clutch.

I know this was an old post but my bearing pack is going out and i need a replacement, the clutch is still find but my pack is gap toothed right now so i have the SC disconnected ATM

This listing shows S, SL and E but also says it will work with all 55 Motors but the part number is slightly different than the one i foundi n the forums for the CL55
