LSD on CL55 and CL65??

I am 99.9 % certain that all AMG's use the same Mettinger HAG M215 Diff. The Quaif and wavetrac units should both work. Does anybody have a picture of the Diff on a CL65?

Not that I don't believe you, with all the research and contributions that you have posted, but its hard to think that this LSD fits the CL65 considering that everything is so different on the 65 cars from the others. Also since this "QDF9V" fits so many cars (see link below). It does mention 215 chassis, but again I thought everything was beefed up on the 65's.

Did your friend have to modify the stock housing? Could you elaborate on what was necessary for the install and/or if it was a direct replacement. Also is it rated for the torque of a stock 65 more importantly, a modified one?
Thanks,

I just searched a little more and found 2 more sites listing the Quaife LSD for the CL65. From what it sounds like, its just a direct replacement. This could be a good thing.

By the way, I called Kleemann and they can modify the existing open differential to a 60% LSD for about $1,000.00. Sending mine out today.

The Kleemann unit works great and you will be happy with it. The Quaife one does not fit as stated even though the website may say otherwise. The 55/63 series cars have a different diameter ring gear. I have a broken middle section in the garage and the V-12 car ring gear is nearly 9 inches. I wish the pinion was as strong as the ring.

What a teaser, you must be the friend in Florida. (referring to Oxygen's post). I guess as always you can't believe everything you see on the internet, even if you want to. Seeing multiple companies list made me think it was true. Thanks for the big heads up france2112 it did seem too good to be true. It looks like Kleeman then which may not be a bad thing, based on Stephen04E55's success with it. Good luck.

That is really cool to hear!!! I couldn't agree with your thinking any more. It would be a sin to have all that power and not get the shove off the line that the car is truly capable of. The other thing is sharing the 1,000 ft./lbs of torque to both wheels gives your axle a fighting chance. I think a few of them snapped with that set up and drag radials.

W215 and W220 cars be it a V8 or V12 have the same differential, and the diff is unique to those two models. The only thing that varies (depending on engine size) is the F.D. ratio. I've installed KLEEMANN LSD kits in every W215 and W220 model- 430, 500, 55, 600 and 65- they are all the same with the exception of F.D. Ratio. The Quaife will absolutely not work.
KLEEMANN's LSD is $945.00. Send me your diff, and I will install the LSD, and ensure backlash, etc. is set correctly- just pay shipping to and from. When you get it back, all you need to do is fill it with your preferred oil (anything GL-5 rated of the proper weight for your climate), bolt it in and drive.
030 performance package cars are the only ones that had an LSD from the factory (W215 and W220)- it's the same type (salisbury, 30% locking) as the SL65 uses. You can buy these from your local dealer if you have an 030 car's VIN number, but it will set you back around $4600.00. KLEEMANN is the only company who currently has an LSD for these cars.

Gents, I apologize for the mis-information. I spoke to my friend in FL and he informed me that the LSD did not fit and he went with the Kleemann solution instead.

Seems to hook up well
Got my car back. First of all the power is amazing. did the Speedriven package upgrade: Larger intercoolers, scorpion intake, and ECU/TCU upgrade. Car is an absolute rocket!! Still spins on launch but appears to hook up better then before. Worth the money spent IMO. BTW, that picture in Oxygen's post is my LSD. He knows the tech that installed my mods and the LSD and it was e-mailed or text to him I suppose. LOL when I saw the picture. Small world.

So france2112,
What are you doing with all the power? Are you planning to take your car the the dragstrip?
I just installed the Speedriven ECU/TCU in my 65. I'm thinking about the intercoolers and maybe a LSD. I rarely am able to use the power I have now on the street. Our track is closed now, it is being resurfaced. I do plan to go when it reopens.
I only had the CL a couple of weeks before I installed the new software. I know it is quicker but it is really hard to quantify. This car is just so different feeling than my E55, the 55 felt faster but I'm not sure it was.
I think it would be really interesting to take it to the track and do runs with the stock program, then the standard 91/93 octane program, and then do a run with the 100 octane program. The trap speed should tell a lot.
I had a dyno scheduled last Saturday and was going to dyno the stock program and the 91/93 octane program but when I got to the shop they cancelled me. They said they had someone from out of town on the dyno and he was having trouble getting his tune right. Since I had two friends already on the way to watch and I had an appointment I was a bit irritated with this company. There is one other dyno shop local and I will probably try again when I get the time.

I got a feeler out to a reputable drivetrain specialist that have done other wavetrac installs on other Mercedes(E55) and Chryslers models.
I'll post up the result if wavetrac makes it for the CL65..
Kinda tired of just burning rubber to keep up with challenges on the street.. but esp comes on. It'd be over alot sooner if I could get the power down to the ground.
If it wasn't for esp, I'd be gone.. or in the ditch.
Anyone turn off ESP all the time?, I've keep forgetting to try it, that is turn it off.
Doesn't ESP still work if you turn it off, and still keep you from still going sideways abit if it's off?

Yeah, you can't really turn ESP off, it basically just changes the allowed slip angle from none at all to a bit. The ESP is a real wet blanket, but agree, it keeps you out of the ditch. What we need is AWD like the Bentley GT. The new twin turbo CL550 4matic looks awesome.
