Oil change - 5W-30 vs 0W-20

Got my first oil change at Meineke today and the technician put in 5W-30 oil instead of 0W-20. The MB manual clearly says only 229.71 / 0W-20 is approved, so I called the shop and they said both oil are fine for the car. Thoughts?

I would not take my vehicle to those chain shops, they do not care, they will add the oil they have available and call it a day. If your car calls for 0W-20, you must add exactly that!

I think you got what you paid for.

Mercedes is VERY specific on the Oil approved for the AMG CLA45, it must conform to the MB-Approval 229.71 which means not only 0w20 but a specific list of Synthetic 0w20 that's approved.
While you are in the warranty period I would stick to the recommended oil. If you want to save money you could buy the oil and filter from a Mercedes Dealer and do it yourself or find a shop that would do it with you supplying the parts.

Do not use 0w-20. All AMG required 5W-40. But you can use mobile 0W-40. If you use 0w-20. It might easily overheat if you drive hard.

This is misleading and wrong. Mercedes Specification 229.71 specifically calls for 0w20 as can be seen in the link I provided in my previous post, I'll copy the link here again.
Instead of giving random (wrong) information, it would help if you backed up your statement with proof of source.

I know. So I called the Mercedes dealer. They told me that they only use 5w-40 for AMG and there’s a YouTuber changed oil from dealer. Here’s the link.

Not all AMG's use the same oil, I would not trust anyone that tells you that. While my car is in the warranty period I'm going to use what Mercedes Benz recommends, and by that, I mean by the manual not the service rep at the dealer. We all know dealers are not always right.
But you are free to do as you wish, as is anyone else reading this thread.

You should take it back to dealer change engine oil for one time. Then you know what oil they use. If you use 0w-20 from other shop and the engine break down. I don’t think you can get warranty. The dealer would probably tell you that we never use 0w-20 for AMG

The new 0w20 oils that meet MB 229.71 are formulated with certain additives that compensate for the lower wt oil (20 vs 30, etc,). They also have a rating of API-SP and rated G5 or G6 which is the latest formulas. . It may also protect piston damage from Low speed pre ignition. That is the one I now run

I know the book shows MB229.71. But the dealer never use 0w20. they only use 0w40 or 5w40 you should call and ask them why lol

why would you want to use something that doesn’t jive with all the documentation Merc puts out? 🤷‍♂️

I asked the dealer and he said they use whatever MB sends them and that oil formulas change too often for them to keep up. He said as long as the oil indicates it meets MB spec (229xx) then OK to use.

As a parts advisor for Mercedes, if Benz says X. That's what the dealership must use unless they want warranty claims bouncing. Mercedes will not pay a for a dealer for a job if they have the wrong parts billed to the repair order, especially the wrong engine oil lmao.

229.71 is our 0w20 with Mercedes. We used it for our 260/264 engines when Mercedes 5w30 when on backorder. But now the 254 engine in the C300's will take only 0w20 rated, no longer acceptable to put 5w30/5w40, must be 0w20. IMO don't bother taking your car to chain car place like that. Learn it yourself or take it to a better a shop that cares. I deal with Meineke shops often. Like someone else said, you get what you pay for.
