A-Class W168 A190 Auto Petrol 2004
New Member in south east France

Hi
I'm new to the forum, however I've had a long history with Mercedes cars.

At the present moment in time I have a faithful and very loyal A-Class W168 A150 auto, petrol, born into this world in 2004.

Unexpectedly, which is the usual way of these events, she stalled and rolled to the side of the road. Unfortunately, the road was on the side of a mountain in the French Alpes and the local garage has no idea what to do, particularly as it’s a right-hand drive British car.

All the lights are working, and all lights on the instrument panel function.

I was able to restart the engine a couple times, but the engine lacked power and stalled after a short distance.

Over a space of about 4 weeks, I got the engine to start twice before stalling.

The starter no longer engages, however with the ignition switched on, the electric radiator fan spins very fast and very noisily.

The battery has been changed without any improvement.

Fuses and relays have been checked and appear good, however the starter relay is integrated into the starter motor so difficult to check.

On the good side, connecting the purple/white cable from the three pin plug in the battery box to the positive side of the battery causes the starter motor to turn in a very healthy manner, but the engine does not start.

The OBD reader is getting power from the socket, however the reader cannot communicate, so I don’t have any error codes. Before this problem occurred, the reader has worked perfectly.

The symptoms suggest a faulty earth or a break in a cable, however, the biggest problem is finding a wiring diagram. I’ve downloaded a couple of workshop manuals without finding a wiring diagram.

I checked the socket to the ECU and with the ignition on there’s a healthy 12v.

All the earth’s I could find appear healthy.

I found a couple of 5v circuits on small plugs connected to the front of the engine which I could probably use to provide power to the ECU, assuming a break in a cable somewhere.

I urgently need a pin-out of the cables for at least the ECU.

Any help or suggestions would be most welcome.

Very many thanks,

Peterfd

Welcome! Please post a photo of the A-Class.

I have visited the beautiful area of southeast France. From Chamonix to Cannes is a beautiful and remote mountain region.

Try posting your questions in the section of the site for your model and year.
