Porsche 912/914 uses the type 4 VW engine, this engine is a 2.0ltr twin carb setup and can also be found in campers etc.
Trying to turn that car into a racer will cost you serious $$$$$$ to get it even competitive.
Buy it for what it is /classic 60's roadster.

I've got a '73 Porsche 914 2.0, which is the largest motor thay made with the 4 cyliner engine. This is the most desirable year and engine type of all the 914's because the "appearace package" available for them (center console, gauges, chrome bumpers, vinyl roll bars, etc) was standard, unlike the '74 where they became an option. Your other bet is to look for a 914/6, which is a 2.0 6-cylinder Porsche engine from the 911T. Those are desirable as well and very good performers, but they are much rarer and more expensive ($10K-$17K for a mint one). The good thing about the 914/4's, and the 914's in general are that they handle extremely well, and are very fun to drive with the targa top off. We have actually been talking about getting rid of ours which is in excellent condition, and looking for a 911. If your interested in the 912, They made them from '65-'69 equipped with a small 1600 cc motor, like the one from the 356's, and then made them for one more year in '76 called the 912E (this is the one everyone including me wants) It's basically a 911 body (with about a 1" shorted wheelbase) and the 4 cylinder 2.0 engine from the 914. If you have anymore questions let me know....Porsches are my life.

oh great im glad someone knows what they are talking about!!!!
ok, so what would be the best year of the porsche 912 to get? i was also thinking about the 944. im not too big of the 914 , i like the 911/912 looks more. i would love to get a 993 coupe but that is not in my <10K price range. i dont need a Cab. because i have the SL and the 996 for that. so what do you think?

Well, i guess it depends on how much work your willing to do on it. For example, my dad and i bought our 914 for <$1000, and we've maybe put about $4500 into it with engine rebuild, paint, interior, cosmetics, etc, and it almost looks brand new driving down the street. What's nice about the 912's (like the 914's) is that they're a 4-cylinder engine, therefore they are relatively cheap to maintain mechanically because they are basically a VW engine (however cosmetic parts will be more expensive because they have to be Porsche parts). If I were you looking for something with a 911 body style, I'd first look at the 912, more importantly I'd try to find a '76 912E, which have a 911 body on them. (You can pull up pictures on the web to see the difference b/t the '65-'69 912's and the '76 912E.) Im sure you'll like the 912E better. That way you will have the 911 with the maintenance of a 4-cylinder. It all depends on the condition of the car, and how much work is needed to restore it. No matter what you'll probably need an engine rebuild just to be safe. If you want a 911, obviously there's gonna be more performance there but the 6-cylinder will be more expensive to maintain (but they're fun as hell). If i were looking at a 911 I'd concentrate on a late '70's 911 SC, which had wider rear fenders, and the '80-'85 911 SC's(the '84's got more power, and the '85's got "turbo-like" fenders). The early 912's you'll probably find b/t $5-$10K, the 912E from $9-$15K (depending on condition) and the 911SC from $10-$20K. (depending on condition). Hope some of this hepls, probably gave you more info than you need. But like I said, if we ever get rid of our 914 I'd love to get a 912E or an '80's 911SC. Keep me updated, I'm in socal too. Later.

Oh, as for the 944's, I like their styling too, and you can find them for REALLY cheap. (They lost their value pretty fast.) The regular 944's and 944S are pretty standard of what you'll find on the streets and in the auto trader for cheap. I persoannly would never get one, but if i did i would look for and '88 944 Turbo, which were supposed to have pretty good power. (they stopped the turbos in '88, and stopped the 944 altogether in '90, which was redesigned and renamed the 968, which had a 3.0L 4-cylinder) and these wereactually really fast. They stopped them in '93 though. OK im done.

hey thanx a lot for this information it helps a lot. im going to check out some porsches today. im not looking for a bute' car. just a car to have fun on the weekends with. i know 944s are POSs but they are also ~4K on auto trader.com and that is cheap. they also have one with 380Hp to the wheels that some guy modded out. so im just going to keep my mind open a look at some today.

If you are no too much of a purist but like the 911 Targa body, I have a car you might be interested in. It is a 1975 bright yellow (factory color) that is in very good condition. No rust, no body work.
The 2.7 liter stock engine leaked major amounts of oil. I replaced it with a turbo rotary. It now puts about 275 horse to the ground. No, I have not had it on a dyno. Rotary Performance who built the engine believes it makes 325 to 350 at the crank. The engine only has around 3500 miles on it. If you know much about rotaries you know that there is still quite a bit more power available with more turbo boost. It has a Haltech ECU.
Due to the age of the car you probably would not have to worry about smog laws.
I am askibng $15,900
A few pics are available at
http://web2.airmail.net/atl/Rotary.html
near the bottom of the page, stock looking 911.
And before anyone flames me for putting a Japanese engine in a German car remember that Dr. Wankel was German.
I live in Texas so it might be farther than you want to go. I can provide references if you need them.
The reason I am selling is that I have too many vehicles. I just bought a '98 C230 and something has to go.

Not trying to be a smart alec but it will be for sale until it sells. I live in a town of 3,000. Not too much market for such a one of a kind vehicle.
The rims have been polished since those photos were posted.
Make me an offer, the worst that can happen is I get a good laugh!
Thanks for the compliment.

my offer would be 5K (remember my budget is for a 912 that needs some work) the tottal cost i would like to keep under 10K. but that car is sweet.

Mmmmm....Porsche...
The only thing you need to remember with your budget is with Porsche (not so much the 914 or 912 variants) is that your 10K will quickly become twice that amount....all for a car that in the end is going to be worth less that half of that.
I turn wrenches on Porsches for a living...unless you can score decent, rebuildable used parts, that 5K you have budgeted for upgrades/restoration will be eaten up quickly...
Just track the 02 you have in your signature...should be more than capable out of the box.
Here's my baby (the blue one):
