Aircon / fan problem?
I have the automatic airconditioning on my 1999 CLK 320 with the LCD screen. I have a strange problem: every say 20 seconds the fan goes to full speed for 1 sec and then back to the speed i have set. Very annoying. Any ideas what this might be and how to solve it?
While i'm here could some one explain what the AUTO, REST and EC buttons do exactly. I have german manuals and I can't read german

not sure about your other problems, but auto is automatic. to me, it doesn't really do much. i think it slows down the fan automatically or something. if you press the REST button before you get out of your car, it'll keep the heat going for some time after (i think 30 minutes? not sure). EC means the compressor isn't running and you're just running the fan to get outside air.

Does it do it every 20 seconds or once in a while. The auto function will increase the fan speed if neccessary to get to the set temperature. If it does it all the time, meaning every 20 seconds, check the AC diagnostics for the in-car temperature sensor value and make sure everything is kosher.

Once in a while I would say. But it does not do it smoothly like my volvo did, but suddenly full blow for a second or so. The noise of the full fan makes it a big disturbing.
It did not do it today though....

I had a similar problem. As bad as this sounds for a mercedes, it was actually the auto buttons sitting on the unit wrong. I took the buttons off, dusted them and reattached them and everythings good now. However, to see if this is your problem give it a moderately hard tap around the auto buttons. If there is an immediate increase/decrease in fan speed this is your problem.
