Steering wheel loose

Is there ever any play in the steering wheel. When stopped, in different situations, like halfway up a driveway or straight ahead, there may be some slop. It goes away at other times or at speed. I can't remember if it was like that when new. You can turn the wheel left or right maybe an inch before it will steer.

I've never noticed any play when the wheel was straight, but there's TONS of play when you're stopped with the wheel turned. I'm pretty sure it's the recirculating-ball steering.

Thanks, that was exactly what I wanted to hear(well not really but at least it is normal). I just had an alignment after getting the car and wasn't sure about it. Does the front also feel kind of loose or disconnected when entering driveways at an angle? Otherwise, great V8 can't imagine what the 55 feels like.

Well...

We have the G500 coming in 2 months to replace my wife's Land Rover, so I decided to keep the CLK for myself for now.

I have the new 03 CLK500 Cabrio with hardtop on order, until that comes out I will just keep my CLK320 Cab...

Yep, just one of those things. I got used to it right away, and it's totally normal.

I had the same problem, I thought it was caused by changing wheels, so I brought my car to check for alignment but it's not. The steering just behaves like this.
