Damn- your mechanic should've had more info than that.

Any time the Check Engine Light comes on, the mechanic should use an ODBII reader to get the message from the car regarding the issue.

If he didn't check that first, get a new mechanic... or get your hands on an ODBII reader. I got mine for about $100 and now I can see what the issue is my self when the CEL comes on.

I've reading about how if your gas cap is loose then the light will come on. I check my gas cap and indeed it was loose, but after I retighten it, the light is still on. I drove the car for 5 minutes and nothing so far. I'll check tomorrow and see what happens....

Yes, when my light came on it was for both the o2 sensors & MAF. It would turn on/off every few days.

You need to drive it for a period of time without the error happening again and then shut it off and then repeat twice. You can't just start and stop it, it has to be driven for awhile. But if the error is still occuring (whatever it was), the light will not shut off by itself.

Your MAF will set off the O2 sensor codes. Most likely, it's your MAF. They typically go out between 50-70K miles. Search MAF sensor on google and you should be able to get it for $220 or cheaper on ebay. It's a 10 minute do-it-yourself job.

also, if it was your MAF, you'll notice a change in the performance of your car... if you don't really notice a loss of power, then it may just be ur gas cap

O2 sensors on our cars don't typically go out that early, unless you've been using some cheapo gas. MAF sensors do. If your CEL doesn't go off after the MAF replacement, then keep it handy because it will go out.

I have driven the car for 4 days now and teh light is still on. 2 days ago i filled it w/ fresh high octane gas and i made sure the gas cap ws ont tight. I remember when i first hit that pothole my low fuel light came on and it was flashing although the tank was half full. When i parked the car i noticed the fuel cap resting on top so i figured that was the problem, but 4 days later and the light still on!!!

what's next...diconnect the battery or wait longer? i dont think is anything else like sensors and crap....i think.
