how wide a tire can you go on the back
I am looking at 18 inch 2003 sl55 rims and the offset and such seem fine but the tires are 245 in the front and 285 in the back. Any clue if this would fit? My first thoughts are that 285 is too wide and it would rub in the rear?

I have 275/30/19 on the rear. 285's look like they'll fit too. I also run a 10mm spacer with the wheel arch liner taken out. I don't have my arches rolled and I've no rubbing.

I've personally run 275/18/35s. That's about as far as I would go, especially if you're lowered.
And just as a side note...when I ran 225s in the front and 275s in the rear, my cruise control wouldn't let me go past 70 on the setting. Marcus has chimed in when I asked why it was doing that, and he said that at the speed that the ECU is reading from front/rear ratio in tire size is what was causing it.
Just be sure if you go anything over a 255 in the rear, Go with a 235+ in the front...

I had 265 on my rears and they rubbed on the inside tyre lining, but thats all dependant on the offset of course so dont get too worried. The other thing was that the large the tyre the smaller it makes the wheel look and can hinder the overlook. I personally like a little stretch to my tyres on my 9,5J rims and I have 255 x 35 x 18" but not made that you have a horrible ride. I have also stuck on some 18mm spacers to kick out the back and fill the arches.
Good Luck.

help with tire sizing
I bought a 2001 clk 430 amg, it has285 35 19's on it and has a rubbing problem...the tires were brand new when i bought it in January and i didn't know there was a problem until i took it in for service and found that a chunk of rubber was missing and tires were about to go....is there any way to keep this size tire using spacers? i cann't afford to buy new rims and tires and i have to buy tires now...it has the chrome mercedes rims and i would really like to keep them on it...any help would be greatly appreciated.
