When to Sell

So cars depreciate and are bad investments. Everyone knows this. It is good to have a car you love so you can keep it for a long time. Had a '99 CLK 430 which my dad bought me because I was doing well in school. Totalled and bought myself a 2002 CLK 430 with my own money (would have purchased the new body style but I hate the new look) and paid my dad back with the insurance money. I am 20 years old and have a really good job with a technology company and I go to school full time.

My dad told me when I graduate from college (in around 2 years), as a grad present he will buy me a CLS 500. (my dream car after the SL). My question is, if I really want an SL, should I get wait until I have enough money to buy one or should I sell my CLK and get the CLS and then later on get the SL.

What I do not want to do is keep throwing money away on cars but on the other hand, I don't want to sell my car for only $12k in 5-6 years. What do you guys think is the smartest thing?

If anyone is going to tell me to invest in a house instead, I already have a down payment ready and will be purchasing one by December.

Buy a CPO (Certified, Pre-Owned) SL....let another take the depreciation hit. Then you get your dream car, a warranty, plus your won't suffer as much financially.

Leasing makes more sense if you can get a good deal. I for one, will not buy a car again.

I agree, leasing is definitely a good option if you do not intend to keep the car more than 3-4 years. just make sure you negotiate the mileage you intend to drive ahead of time. And if you drive more than 25k-30k miles/per year. you might want to go with a pre-owned.
