Question By The Numbers

Does anyone know what are the production numbers for the W208 CAB? i.e. How many were made and release each year in the U.S.? and worldwide? 320? 430? 55?

compared to the coupe?

compared to the W209?

MBUSA used to list U.S. sales figures on their website at MBUSA.com, but that seems to have been suspended after MY 2000 or so.

You might try to e-mail Mercedes-Benz directly with your inquiry.

at one time, i thought they just needed some time to calculate how many vehicles they sold... but yea, its kinda rediculous that they haven't updated anything past year 2000...

slvrstar, if you REALLY want to know, i can help dig up some info based on sample transaction data spread across total vehicle sales... not hard to do, but, i'm not gonna do it unless you REALLY want to know

Thanks mmgrad. I really want to know but hopefully it's not too much time and trouble for you. Either way, I appreciate your help.

Ok, here are some pretty close sales #'s for the US... no worldwide data

2001
CLK320 ~ 11,479
CLK430 ~ 7,427
CLK55 AMG ~ 517

2002
CLK320 ~ 10,196
CLK430 ~ 6,596
CLK55 AMG ~ 459

2003
CLK320 ~ 11,365
CLK500 ~ 7,353
CLK55 AMG ~ 512

2004
CLK320 ~ 13,331
CLK500 ~ 8,625
CLK55 AMG ~ 600

I have inventory data also, but they can get double counted each month, so, no good really... Production data, well, its not made in the US, so, we don't have that data either

Great work, Danny

FWIW, the W208 CLK55 numbers seem to jive with the estimate I had for 2001 + 2002 cars. My guess was around 1100-1300 cars brought to the U.S., so 976 total is not that far off.

Chappy, you may very well be right on the money... 976 is the number of units SOLD in calendar years 2001 & 02

At the end of December 2001, there was still 236 units sitting as inventory on dealer lots... and another 125 in December 2002.... That adds up to 1,337 MAX for those 2 years... I say MAX because there may be some overlap in inventory as they take inventory every month, and maybe a few CLK55's sat around the lot for a year? (like those Emerald Green ones )

Great info. I know lots of '01s were sold in 2000, do the figures reflect that as well?

yes, that would be included... they are strictly calendar year sales... starting around Oct '02, it could be the 03 models

great info MMGRAD! Hey bro, do you know the breakdown for cabriolets? I heard the production numbers (or units sold numbers) were alot lower than coupes on the W208. Just wanted to know why I had to wait 18 months on the waiting list and pay over sticker on the car when I picked it up.

cabriolets prices are very much determined by where you are located... a clk cab in montana isn't as desireable as a clk cab in So cal or sunny Florida...

unfortunately, i'm in so.cal L.A. area. and was charged a arm and leg and everything else for it. I was told that the number of cabs to coupe were in the minimum 5 to 1 ratio, don't know if there's any truth to that?

5 to 1 is a little extreme... i would say, 2.5 to 1 at the very most...

yeah, that was what I was told by the sales guy when I purchase it. Had no way of justifying it. Do the numbers justify 2.5 to 1?

MMGRAD, I see on your description that you have a Eclipse AVN 2din unit in your car. Can you tell me a little more about it? Do you like it, what's the positive and negative things about it, how much did it cost you. I'm looking for one, maybe the upcoming 5495(I think that's the model number) with the hard drive model but it's going to cost me about $2500. Never seen it so I have no idea whether or not to invest in something unseen and untested.

It looks like the numbers for the 55 could be low because of the answer I got from MBUSA when I had asked the following question. Notice the response date was Feb 2002.

What are the overall 2001 production numbers
for the CLK55 for the U.S. and for total production?

sorry for the late reply... but, yea, i like the eclipse... its clean looking, no constant flipping screen, and DVD is sooo much faster than the CD based COMAND...

The one with the hard drive has been out for a while, not sure if its the same model number you mentioned above tho...
