Unhappy **bas**esp**abs**bas**esp**abs**

At first it was only every so often that the BAS / ESP / ABS warning lights would come on. Of course - I'd ignnore them and they would promptly turn off every time I re-started the car... But now they come on EVERY TIME - ALL THE TIME

I don't want to sound ignorant but is there a common cause that triggers these warnings that I might be able to address myself??

Nothing worse than seeing a warning that says "VISIT STEALERSHIP NOW"

Check your voltage at the battery and at the alternator and then report back......it could simply be possible that your battery is going south!

lowphat, had that happen on my 430 and it was the "stop lamp switch." About a $12 art and it fixed the problem. Might try this first and also do a search with "stop lamp switch" and see what comes up here.

Good luck!

yea my stop lamp switch went in my 99 430 and caused that error. if your brake pads are properly installed with the sensor connected then it could just be that your brake pads are wearing thin.....

btw, when the lamp switch goes, you will also get a lamp defective warning and your brake lights will get stuck on....

I had the same problem and it was due to a faulty wheel sensor, but with mine the brake assist would would disengage.

Have you disconnected your battery recently? If so, you need to recalibrate the system by turning the wheel all the way til it locks, hold it there for a second, then turn it all the way to the other lock, hold it for a second, and then bring it back to center. If that's the problem, this will take care of it.

I heard this exact thing from an MB service advisor when I took my car in for the crankshaft sensor. He said his E320 does it, as well.

THIS FORUM IS AWESOME - first off, thank you for all the replies - I mean I posted before leaving work and by the time I got home there are multiple suggestions - that's great.

1. The main symptom for Kleemannitis is a flashing yellow triangle (I have six months to live)

2. I haven't disconnected the battery recently so that may not be the cause. My cap has a voltage meter display - it reads around 12.4 when car is off and between 13 and 14 when it's on - so that seems ok... however,

3. I've been getting lamp defective warning more often than just when I turn my lights on (I'ts been "normal" for me to get it when I turn my lights on ever since I installed the led city lights) AND...

4. My third brake light is not working - so...

Where exactly is this "STOP LAMP SWITCH" ????

Stop lamp switch is located under the dash of the driver's footwell. Remove the cover and you'll see it attached to the brake pedal's arm.

Sounds like a broken steering column spiral. I hope its not more serious than that.

haters crazy
I had the same problem, I changed the stop lamp switch myself (cheap part and easy to change) but that did nothing for me. When I got an alignment done the problem went away. Have you been hitting those HUGE potholes in DC? I'll show you how to change the stop lamp switch at the next meet, if you can wait that long.

Given the car has no safety features then its rather urgent to have it looked at.

Is this for real?

Thumbs up

+1

I think he got it right, most likely its the stop lamp switch. BTW, the switch has 2 parts to it, the brake light activation part and the ESP part of it. The ESP part can be going bad and cause the switch to throw a failing code but the brake lights can still be functioning just fine so dont rule it out just because the brake lights work. Of course there are more things that can cause the light but the stop lamp switch is just the most common cause and the cheapest as well.

Replace your battery with a new one and also check your brake pads it could be triggering the sensors
