I have solved the key housing swap delimma...
Alternatively, for those who wish to retaing their original W208 style key, whereas the keys themselves are scarce, finding keys with ignition switches is far more easily accomplished :
Here is a W208 ignition switch sold with key, and plenty more are available on Ebay:

Here is the exact Ignition Switch Starter Module & Key I have in my W208, and it's clearly a W209 part. I suspect other W208 owners have also made the switch when they could not find replacements for W208 keys.
Available with both module & key for $150-$250US: Switch alone starts @ $50+

I have looked on E-Bay (Australia & across the world), on Amazon, and across the internet, hence this post.
If you (or anyone else) can supply specific details of an example you have found for these older style (Series 1 - 1998-2001 - a208/w208 class) remotes, it would be appreciated.
This post is about the older style (Series 1 - 1998-2001 - a208/w208 class) remotes.
There are hundreds of examples of the later model 2002+ (details below) for sale on e-bay/amazon/etc.
However, I am yet to find one, for remotes relating to my (and I suspect numerous others) key/remote (Series 1 - 1998-2001 - a208/w208 class).
Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class
First generation (1998–2001; C208/A208)
Second generation (2002–2009; C209/A209)
Third generation (2010–present; C207/A207)
Can anyone please assist as to where I (and I suspect numerous others) might be able to source a new case for these older key/remotes.

Thanks very much for your detailed and specific information addressing the issue.
The information itself is very frustrating (in that you need to replace the whole module, because you can't find replacement key cases)
But it is, what it is....
I have 2 keys, one of which is in pretty bad condition, so I am not desperate yet.
But I have to say, that I expected that this (replacing the module and the key) may be the only way around the fact the you can't get new OEM cases for the Series 1 remotes.
Thanks for your assistance.

At Amazon, the description is for a 2009 Mercedes-Benz key cover. Having a 2009 MB in my driveway, I can assuredly state - that is not a 2009 key cover. That is the key cover for my 2002. The same covers are available on Ebay.
There are hundreds of these (mostly Black and similar Black/Chrome) remote cases available on the net for the Second generation (2002–2009; C209/A209) cars.
Still can't find any for the earlier model (1996-2001)

An update on trying to find a replacement key shell.
This ended up being a 3 part process.
1. Purchased a new key blade from the USA via E-Bay
(http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/MERCEDES-...item20eec559ec)
2. Purchased a 2nd hand remote from the USA via E-Bay (http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/m.html?_o...Z3302&_sacat=0)
3. Got the new key blade cut to suit my car (based on my original key) at a local locksmith.
The 2nd hand remote had existing electronics which I removed and replaced with the electronics from my original remote (as all I really needed was a new remote shell)
I did have a key, however it was broken at the key loop so I replaced it at the same time.
It appears that you can't get new replacement key shells for the older series 1 Mercedes remotes, but a good 2nd hand one does the job.
Thanks all for your assistance.
Just search for 1yx3302 on Ebay, several sellers
The Best of Mercedes & AMG
Just transfer the electronics and backplate to case (not sure why the backplate isn't part of the case)
See -> https://www.aliexpress.com/w/wholesa...3-button.html?
They don't come the the chrome Mercedes logo on the back, but you can pick these stickers up as well on Ali Express (https://www.aliexpress.com/w/wholesa...rs-14mm-.html?)
