"Defective Lamp" Rear break light

I drive a 2000 Clk430.
I got a message, "Defective Lamp" and found out that my driver side rear break light was out. I replaced to a new bulb from OEM MB bulb but the "Defective Lamp" still on.
With headlights off, drivers side break light looks weaker then the passanger one. I have also noticed now that when the head lamps are turned on the brake lights come on and do not turn off on the drivers rear break. any ideas as to why??? Please help me out here.

I had the same problem as you and on the same side too. So I replaced the bulb with the correct wattage with one I picked up at AutoZone, and the symptoms you mention were pretty much the same as what I experienced. And I couldn't get rid of the lamp message.
It wasn't until I decided to go to the dealership to inquire and purchased the stop light bulb from them for like 3 dollars and change that everything was finally perfect. I don't know, I guess the bulbs are benz specific or something. Good luck.

This is a well known issue at several MB dealers...many times it's not the bulb but rather corrosion buildup on the contacts that the bulb seats on. My dealer just took the bulb out and scraped the mounting surface that the bulb contacts to and the problem was solved.

Stupid but true.
