Hello new member here.

Well I'm considering purchasing my father's (original owner) 1999 CLK430 with only 43K miles. -completely stock. I know the complete service history and it has only been to the MB dealership for any and all service. The last service/fix that was completed was a replacement MAF b/c of check engine light as well as new ball joints. All work done by MB dealership.

I know this is a VERY clean car considering it's in the family and I know it's never been hit or been in an accident. Furthermore I know it hasn't been abused. The car is spotless inside and out. I am presently borrowing it now to determine if I'd like to proceed and buy.

Is there anything I should be aware of or to look for? What's everyone's average cost of ownership with a car 7 years old.

Thanks,
Puma

Maintenance will average about $500/year...less if you DIY. Sound's like the car is clean so buy it. Good luck.

I owned my CLK since last year (Jan. 2005). I just spend money on service/maintenance. The car is great. Though I did have to replace my catalytic converter. That was the most major problem I had with the car. Otherwise its wonderful. That's what I love about Mercedes.

Since your father is the original owner, you might be able to transfer (and extend) the MB warrany. As for service, expect to take it in every 10,000 miles; alternating between a $250 & $400 service at the dealer (half at a reputable MB mechanic). It's still a machine, so there still may be an unforeseen problem that may need to be addressed in the next 60,000 miles (most likely electrical). You'll also need to change the brake pads and tires occasionally. I've owned 3 benzes and have never needed to fork out serious cash for any major repairs (knock on wood). I drove my '97 e-class to 160,000 miles; the last 60,000 of which didn't require anything but regularly scheduled service. My CLK has just over 70,000 and all I've done is replace the suspension because the shocks tend to die after 60,000 miles. They're great cars. You won't be disappointed!

Exclamation Buyin the CLK from Pops....

I recently bought my old man's 2000 CLK 430 and its a freakin dream . Always garaged, all service done at MB Dealer, under 46k when I purchased, great paint, flawless body, clean engine.....then 1500 miles after the pinkslip changed hands I get stuck with not only the mother of all Flex Service plan scheduled maintainance but I also find out the rotors and pads all need to be serviced from (orig. equip.)! Even though I bought from pops I should have had an eval done by th MB service center prior to buying. Wouldda put the pressure on my father rather than on me less than 3 months after buying to the tune of about $1500 bucks . Aside, the car is amazing and I'm even concidering a few minor MODS.

In the end....DO IT....BUT BE SMART/SAVE YOURSELF SOME DOUGH...LET THE ORIG OWNER SELL YOU A CAR THAT IS MORE THAN JUST CURRENT ON ALL MAINTAINANCE!

Good idea on getting it checked out by the dealership beforehand. I'm still on the fence whether or not to get the car OR get a cheap daily driver as I originally planned.
