Accelerating with A/T gearbox

Accelerating with A/T gearbox
I went for a little spin today and a big question arose... How can I shift gears with A/T gearbox as quick as possible. The gear changing lag was enormous. I tried following: switched to 1st with tip_tronic and held the brakes on. Rose rpm's to 2000 (I have narrow tires) and launched. Good so far, but...
I was told to lift my foot from the gas pedal for a glance when switching up to minimize the lag. Did that, gear number on the LCD changed from 1st to 2nd but car didn't switch gears. So the idle bumped to the limiter and stayed there for approximately 0,5 seconds. Then finally it switched to 2nd. The same was with another gears.
How can this be avoided. It's my first car with A/T and don't know how to push it to the limits.
Can anyone give me some good suggestions?
BTW car is '01 CLK 320
