Tire Recommendations

2 part question:

1) What are a decent set of tires for a resonable sum of money? I know I'm going to get a bunch of different opinions but I'm considering P-Zeros(Pirelli) right now. They get excellent ratings and they're running about $154/ea. from Tirerack for the rears and $127 for the fronts. Thoughts? Comments? Concerns?

2) Has anybody used Tirerack for rubber purchases? How is there delivery/shipping (how soon before you get delivery)?

I've been running Kumho Ecstas for just over $100/tire and I've found them to be great. Not too soft on the tire compoound so they have a relatively long life and the price is right. if you're autocrossing, youd probably want something else. Why spend extra money and get the Z speed rating when are cars are electronically limited at 135 anyway?

I have used Dunlop SP 9000 and Pzero Nero M+S in the past. The Dunlops are great tires, traction is good, noise is ok, but it lasts a long time. The Pzero Nero M+S are not bad either. I put at least 20K miles on it before replacing them with Falken. If you really want quiet tires, I really like the Falken FK-452. I can't say anything much about it since I have only been driving on it for less than 1000 miles. Good luck..

It really depends on:

(1) How you drive the car; and
(2) Your budget

My buddy has gone through several sets of tires on his previous C32 and current SLK55. He advises a HUGE difference in handling characteristics, based on which brand, etc. he has used. He even reported substantial differences in handling between Michelin OE Pilot Sports, PS2s and the Pilot Sport A/S. IIRC, he has had two sets of Pirellis, but preferred the PS2s based on his driving style (and his budget).

He said the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S was scary as he felt the car was much more twitchy as they just didn't stick like the others. He drives fairly aggressively.

Expect that the handling will change if you go with cheap alternatives.

Good luck!

Both the Pirellis and the Kumho's are W speed rated (168 mph). After blowing this tire at 80+ mph, I believe it's a good idea to have better speed rated (and quality!) tires. My car had rubber called 'Aurora' on it. I've never heard of them and I'll certainly not be looking to either. That being said, I decided to go with the Pirelli's although the Kumho's look to be a great buy ($97/ea. for the rear from Tirerack).

Thanks for your feedback!

Yikes...Dunlop. I can't stand them things. Bad experiences with them. Lumps in them and noisy....
Hmm. I heard a couple of people that had problems with Falken so I discounted them. It looks like you're liking their quietness. That's big for me.

I decided on the Pirelli PZero Nero's. A buck fitty for a set of tires that it's hard to find dissenters on sounds like a good buy for me. Can't go $200 a pop and the lower priced tires get more mixed reviews. PZeros get the most consistent (from buyers and critics) reviews. THANKS ALL!

Thanks Chappy. I found that the Michelins simply cost too much ($211 ea.). I'm bigger on noise suppression and longevity. Pirelli seemed to be the way to go for $155....THANKS for the advice!

A best kept secret.

I did a lot of research and bought BF Goodrich Contact T/A's for my 2001 320 Cab..

Much better in every way than the OEM Cintinental Contacts.

They are owned by Michelin....check out the reviews on this tire at tirerack.com.

Best part was a set of 4, mounted and balanced was less than $400.
