1999 CLK 320 - cracked oil pan
Doing things ***-backwards, I've purchased a 1999 CLK 320 with 155,000km from a friend, THEN did the inspection. The MB dealership has informed me that sometime ago the balance shaft snapped, and cracked the top of the oil pan, resulting in a slow oil leak. They estimate C$8,000 to pull the engine and fix the pan (the balance shaft was repaired earlier).
For 20 hours labour (estimated), this still seems a high price to me. Anyone have any experience/educated opinion on this?
Thanks!

Whats the exchange rate... that will help a lot of people in the states figure out if your gettin ripped off or not...
I cracked my lower oil pan and I just paid for the parts and changed it myself...
good luck with your fix

i would definately try an independent shop. i just had my cylinder heads removed due to a spark plug that broke. im sure it would been thousands of dollars at the dealer ship. i ended up paying 500 for labor, plus 400 in parts. so total was just under 1k dollars

C$8,000 = approx. US$6,800.
They say they have to pull the engine, which would take at least 20 hours, plus parts (this was the original estimate). They also mentioned that Mercedes knows about balance shaft problems with the CLK, but apparently the '99 doesn't qualify for recall/extended warranty assistance.

The balance shaft you are referring to I believe is the harmonic damper. It was a recallable item in 99 and the dealership can check your VIN to determine if you had a bad harmonic damper. The reason MBUSA did the recall is that they were breaking apart and taking out the oil pan of the engine, resulting in the costly repairs you are experiencing. You may see what can be covered by the dealer, since the damper is a recall item and the damage was due to the damper failing and taking out the pan in your case. Hope this helps and best of luck!

bbearden: You're absolutely right, it is the harmonic damper! You've just given me a ray of hope! The dealer said my model wasn't part of the recall, but it seems like one hell of a coincidence...
If worse comes to worse, perhaps I'll try contacting MB Canada Head Office and see if they'll give me any love (what are the odds of that happening?!?!

Glad to help you out. You might go check your VIN at another dealer to confirm that your car is part of the recall. Best of luck and keep us posted on the outcome.

Does anyone here have any experience with this recall (direct or through friends)? Just hoping for a concrete example should I have to deal with the MB mothership directly.
Thanks again...

HB recall.
Hi UNIQUECOUPE,
My 00CLK320 had a recall from MBUSA on the harmonic balancer. Part were replaced without charge, before any damage to my car. You may call MB Canada with your VIN, if you VIN are on the recall list, all the damge will be paid by MB (this recall 1st happen in Japan a couple year ago, then to USA, I do not know about Canada). Good luck.
