Is it normal for a clk dash to crack on the airbag seem?

I have a 99 Clk 320 Cabrio. Just hit 15000 miles, rarely even use it. It totally separated along the perforation for the airbag.

When they repair this, is it an intense job? Will I most likely get more noises after they tool around in there?

Thanks!

Common problem, Just got mine back from the dealer. only took them 3 days to replace the whole dash and some other minor stuff.

Don't know how much it would cost since I got it replaced under warranty...

But seeing how a seat bracket replacement will cost $1400, I can't imagine how much the dash would cost without warranty....

I didn't change mine, too scared of more problems and sqeaks.

I can't see it while driving, so I am cool with it. It has not got any bigger in the last 3 months, but dealer knows me, and said it, it will never be like factory fitted and if it were replaced I will be opening a can of worms. Also I have no problems with the dash at the moment, so I am going to leave it as it was only 1.5cm.

See thats the thing.

If they take all the stuff apart, am i risking stuff not being aligned?

New noises??

when i first got my car, the convert top hydralic system blew and oil leaked all over. When they put it al back togehter, they actually screwed the top section of the rear seat into the wire harness by the subwoofer. I brought it in insisting that the seat angle was wrong, on the recipt it said, checked against another CK seat installe correctly.

So i just fixed it myself but the wires obvisiosly werent destroyed.

Dam theM!

HOI did a pretty good job installing the new dash. Except i suspect they are the one who broke the wood trim on top of the dash. the crack of the woodtrim is not to noticeble, so i didn't complain (my sis didn't even know that crack exist)...haha

x15jq, I think you need to go to another dealer, this dealer just sounds imcompetent to me.

And to tell you not to replace it cause it will open up a can of worms? I think that is just avoiding responsibility!!!!

And believe me, my new dash looks "Factory Fitted"!!!!

are u guys talkling about where the airbag would deploy from? like the airbag square? because the bottom on that square does have like a razor thin crack but just at the bottom not any other side. i thought it was normal. but it is so so tiny i can only see it if i go very very close.

is that was everyone is talking about?

yeah, that's what everybody is talking about. On the dark color dash board like charcoal, the crack is not too noticeble, but on the light color like ash, it is very noticeble.

wow all this time i thought that was supose to be there.

It looks like it could have been normal. So are we saying that that crack just came or was it a defect and always there?

no, the crack just comes... prolong exposure to the sun I guess...

It looks kind of like the airbag was deployed before, and some one other than the dealer try to put it back...

Mine had cracks on all 4 sides... it was horrible...

my car is only a cupple months old and its never in the sun that long.

I am definitly not going to have it replaced becuase its just on the very bottom and it is so so so thin just like a slice from a razor and i cant even notice it sitting in the passenger seat unless i got about 2 inches away and still bairly see it. Unless of course it gets worse i will not need it replaced.

My sentiments exactly BlackC230Coupe

My car is in London, so it makes no difference with sun.

Any 2002 car owners with this problem? If not I guess they fixed it in the new car. Mine is a 2000, I first noticed in May, no further cracks.

i think it's a design problem. Once you get the dash board replaced, it's fine. Our is a 2000, and i noticed the crack when the car was 13 months old. Had the dash replaced, and nothing came up since. I would say our dealer did a good job, IF they didn't crack the wood trim in process.

btw the wood trim is not replaced since my sister can't see the crack because it's right above the tachometer, and i didn't bother to tell her. Time to trade in the pos.

is she going to get the 03 CLK? i saw a CLK500 today it was not to bad looking all over but if i would have to change soemthing it would be the back. But i guess it will grow on me over time. So i guess i like both the CLK's but its just that the 02's look soo much more muscular. When the CLK500 cabrio comes out i definitly will consider that or a SLK32 AMG.

she could get the 01 CLk55 from a friend of ours, and gave him our car and whatever the difference is. Drive that for another year or two, then get the 04 or 05 CLK. Or she'll just wait for the 04 CLK.

If i'm the designer, the one thing i would change on the new CLK is the interior. It's just too much like the C-class. It would be much better if they make'em like the E-class.
