Happy owner of '98 CLK 320
He should be just pressing the button on the remote shortly, is he holding it down for 2-3 seconds?
Perhaps he should try a different remote too.

check to air line going to the gas door. most likely it is not releasing the air that moves the locking spike. our cars locking system is run on air.

ALi

the vacumm pump is located in the trunk, behind the right-hand-side panel (you will need to remove some clips starting from the center, in order to "peel" away the panel.

you think thats whats causing the Trunk malfunction?

Just so I understand what you're asking -"every time" this guy unlocks his car, the trunk opens. Does it happen with both electronic keys? If not, one key is broken. If so, the vacuum pump or lines are faulty.

On this same car, the fuel filler lid is locked. Like OPAL208 said, I'd check the vacuum pump.

Until the vacuum issue is sorted out, your friend can use the fuel filler manual release knob. If the next question is "Where is the fuel filler manual release knob?" It's behind the right side trunk panel. I've never used it, but according to the owner’s manual, your friend will have to pull the manual release knob while simultaneously opening the fuel filler flap.

I hope that helps.
