Photoshop Trials, wheels and lowering

Here's a couple of pics. been trying to learn photoshop.

1) lowered
2) lowered w/ black/red wheels

I had a really tough time turning the wheels from silver to black. i would gain lots of blue and lose decent lighting. I finally used the invert option and played with the colors. any photoshop experts have advice?

I don't know that mine is any better, but here is a quicky that I did of the front wheel. I used Image-Adjustments-Brightness/Contrast & Hue/Saturation. It's always been hard for me to change stuff to black.

Not 100% sure what you are looking for, but here's your wheel black while retaining the natural contrast highlights.
