Wheel Weight

OK, so I know wheel weight/inertia affects the power you receive and feel, as well as braking and handling ability. Therefore 19's can be a performance decrease.

I was under the impression that AMG wheels are lightweight performance wheels. Is this true?I found a chart that said 17x7.5 and 17x 8.5 amg monoblocks weigh 27.5 and 28 lb, respectively.

My 19x8.5 and 9.5 Axis Milano's claim to be 25 and 26 lb respectively. So it seems like there shouldn't be too much performance lost, especially compared to traction gain. How much does a LIGHT 19" wheel weigh?

(For you engineers, I understand weight isn't the primary factory. It's inertia, the location of the weight. For 19's, the moment of inertia will typically inrease b/c the weight is further from the axle. But it looks so good...)

It's not just the weight of the wheel, you also have to add the weight of the tire.

The lower the profile of the tire, the more reinforcement needs to be in the sidewalls so = more weight.

I would consider a set of 18" to be lightweight if they were <20 lbs.

If you want lightweight, you might want to look into Enkei RPF1's, Volk TE37's, SSR Comps, etc etc...

Guitarist, you’re hitting nails on the head. Wheel weight is of GREAT importance. Those who follow F1 and motorcycles know this intimately. Wheel weight can kill braking - and for the exact same reason, negatively impact acceleration. 180 mentioned another point that many people overlook – tire weight. Tire stats are available, but many people don’t use them – and tire weight has a greater affect on increasing moment of inertia than most wheels do. When making a decision based on performance (versus "check out da phat lip yo!"), wheel strength, total weight, and how the mass is distributed are important factors. For strength and weight distribution, you’ll have to depend on the word of the manufacturer.

In partial answer to your question, which I neglected to do originally, BBS LMs weigh about 24/25 pounds in a 19 by 9/10.
