I recently replaced a mirror motor and after I finally got the glass off, I realized how easy it really is to get inside. If you move the mirror all the way down ( see the pavement from the drivers seat), you will see a thin spring wire along the top edge of the mirror. It hooks under a plastic clip to hold the mirror in place. If you unhook it, the mirror and motor comes off (motor connects withe wiring). You can then see the screws holding the cover, lighting, mounts etc..... You can do whatever you want at that point since everything is exposed. The first time I did this I followed the DIY instructions that said to reach into each corner to remove the four screws. This did work but it was not easy and you risk cracking the mirror because you have to really bend it to get the screwdriver in so far. Hope that helps. Wish that I had taken pictures.
