Steering dampner

Have any of you replaced yours? Did you feel a big difference in the tightness of steering after?

I replaced mine about a 1.5 years ago and it definitely tightened up the steering feel! They are only about 65-70 bucks so its definitely worth fixing if its going out or leaking.

does the car need to be on jack stands? do the front wheels need to be fully extended? or can i pull it up on ramps and still be able to remove the damper very easily?

Using a ramp is fine.

The steering damper will help. However, if you're looking for that 'rock solid' feeling check your LCA bushings. Mine were bad in my CLK55 at just 30K miles. I replaced mine with polyurethane bushings (both were only about a hundred bucks).

Extremely sure-footed after this mod.

Care to kindly tell me where i can find those polyurethane bushings? What are the other bushings made out of?

Yeah, the Lower Control Arm bushings are gonna cost you an arm and a leg. Unless you have the proper knowledge and equipment, a mechanic is your best bet. Depending on whether your car is lowered or not, you'll also need the proper bolt kit other than just the bushings. It's actually the LABOR that's gonna kill you. While you're at it, it's very wise to check if you need new ball joints. It's a pain in the *** to have them replaced at different times. it'll be like paying expensive labor TWICE. Oh, by the way, if you're car is lowered, and you're bushings are bad and NEEDS to be replaced, you can't get an alignment. The worn bushings are gonna dis-align it.

The only reason i mentioned this is cause, i just spent $400 parts and labor on replacing my two front wheel bearings. They were completely shot and noisy. The high quality bearings itself cost like $50 per side, the labor is the crazy part. Most reputable shops will charge just under $500 for that type of work. And while my car was up on the rack, they told me that i NEED to get both my ball joints and Lower Control Arm bushings all replaced.

Sorry for the long info, just thought that you might want to know.

I was lucky enough to find a small shop to replace ball joints and poly bushings(thrust) for $300 labor. Parts were $50 for 2 bushings and $20/joint.

Read this thread....there are pics on there of the stock CLK55 LCA bushings (the stock bushings are rubber). AFAIK, you can order the bushings off the LPD Auto ebay page.

Link to poly bushings on ebay (there may be other sellers as well - this is where I got them from):

I'm not a DIYer....other than detailing. I'm certain the labor charges may be costly.
