2005 CLK55 COUPE
2001 CLK 55

All,

Is it worth buying a 2001 CLK55 with 90K miles? Its a 1 owner car and it looks pretty clean. Does anyone know when these cars start breaking down? I dont mind small problems but I really do not want to buy a problem car. Are the engines and transmissions on these cars dependable? I've heard people say the engines go for over 200K miles. Is there any truth to this? Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

I have a friend with a clk 55 and he currently has 160k so i think they do go to about 200k with no problems and that shouldnt be a problem. How much are you buying it for though?

I think you could always try for less. I don't think $13.5 is a terrible price at all tho

You guys are so lucky in the US, cars are just so cheap! I can't believe you can get one of these fine automobile for that price. We would pay 3 times that here! If I were there, I'd pick it up right away and maybe even an extra one for spare parts

Aim for 2K less, and it's a steal.

Mercedes Enthusiast magazine just did a writeup about the W208 AMG model being a bargain for the HP. You AMG guys on this forum beat them to the punch ; -) Hope to join soon

Im thinking I may be able to get it for a little cheaper but Im still kinda worried about the whole mileage thing. To me 90K sounds really high but from what some say its not too much for a Mercedes V8 motor. If so what about the tranny? Are they as tough as the motors in these cars? I guess I do not want to have it become a money pit.. Then again Im pretty sure Im going to end up getting it.. Any input would be much appreciated..

Aaron68, if this car were a M3 with similar mileage, I would say walk away. Generally, I find that we MB drivers treat our cars better and don't drive them as harshly and as such, MBs tend to less troublesome than others. I think just from looking at the condition and service history of the car, you should get a fair idea if the car has been well treated. If you have any doubts then there are may others out there to choose.

Our psychological barrier as far as mileage goes here is 100000kms or around 60000 miles. It took the best part of a year to find one that is comfortably within that barrier. Mine has done 70000Kms and I expect it to do at least 3 times that! I hope you be driving one soon, it is such a wonderful car to drive! The engine note is so sweet!

Well, I went down to take a second look at the car and decided to take it although it had oil leaks all over the place. I had offered the guy $12K which he accepted. So buy the time I went back with a friend to pick up the car which was only about 3 hours the guy sold the car to someone else for $13K.. Oh well guess Im back on the market searching for another one. Im thinking I'll should spend a little more to get a car with less milage. Time will tell..

Sounds like it was a blessing in disguise! All the best with the search, there should be plenty of good ones out there with the current GFC!
