Just do what I did as a temporary fix until you either get a new button or unit installed. I used a small piece of hard paper rolled into a small tube. I then installed this piece of paper into the slot where the plastic piece broke off so that it will hit the button on the inside of the ac unit. I actually kept cutting mine until the button looked as flush as possible and noone could tell that it was a ghetto setup. It worked like this for 6 months until I found a really cheap ac unit on Ebay for 40 bucks. All I needed was the button so I took it off the Ebay unit and then sold the Ebay unit on this site for like 20 or 30 bucks with the missing button. Many people have a jacked up unit and will buy the replacement one really quick.
Hope this helps!! Greg
