Question Mystery question on mileage.

I have always set the last 3 digits of my trip meter to match the last digit of my actual mileage (ex: 16395 miles, then my trip meter will be 395). I drove to my dealer twice and it came out that my trip meter was way off from the actual mileage. (ex: 17500, my trip meter showed 800 as opposed to 500).

My girlfriend has another experience. A week ago, she drove her car for service. She told me that she saw the service representative reset the trip meter to zero (Btw, she also matches her trip meter like I do). But when she went to pick up her car, the last 3 digits of her trip meter match exactly with the actual mileage.

I find this very strange, can any one please comment on this?
