removing my shift knob

Can someone please tell me how to remove my shift knob off of my 00 CLK 320. I have tried to turn it clockwise and counter clockwise. I have pulled straight up on it. I have turned both ways while pulling straight up on it. There are no screws that I can see to remove so I am not sure what else to do. I would like to keep my original in tact though if possible which I am sure it should be. I bought a new wood and leather one from performance products and would like to get it done ASAP. Thanks in advance.

Try this

Turn the chrome ring at the base of the shift knob 90 degrees and let it slide to the console. Then pull the knob straight up and remove the chrome ring. If yours is like the one on my E320 this should do it.

you don't even need to 'remove' the ring at the bottom. the stock ring should be black, not chrome.

but anyhow, just twist that ring counter-clockwise until it stops, and pull the knob straight up. if this is the first time it has been removed (probably), it will take a little muscle to remove it, but it will come off.

to install the new one, just turn chrome ring counter-clockwise again, insert knob down, and turn chrome ring clockwise to lock it.

thats it. very simple

Ok, that was it. It seems so simple if you know what you are doing. Thanks for all the help. I am now the proud owner of a wood and leather shift knob. SWEEET!
