Licence plate light failure = new computer (stealerdship)
Hi folks,
I have an odd problem with my 02 CLK 430. I seem to have a situation where my license plate bulb seems to burn out the fuse that's linked to my dash lights. Is this common? The dealership made me feel miserable like they didn't have a clue but would change out a computer for about $ 1000.
Any ideas of what to do here? Can i just run a wire connecting the pos and negative for the light bulbs to prevent the dash lights from going all the time. So, the short term fix is to replace the two bulbs and to replace fuse 11 (7.5a). This lasts anywhere from 1 minute to 20 days. Help. I can't believe that a licence place bulb is going to cost me a grand.
Did i mention Help ~ !!! ?

Many dealers specialize in replacing subsystems. It sounds like your particular dealer is one of them. I’d start by replacing the light socket with a universal that accepts the same sized bulb. If that fails, you’re going to have to chase wires to find the short.

Replace the computer...that's darn near fraud....the automotive equivalent of killing the messenger.
Please let the dealerhip name be known so that their reputation suffers, at least as much as through the people who read this thread. Who knows, maybe it will get a high ranking in Google and it will really hurt...

I suggest you buy or borrow a multimeter to work out if there is a short in the system. If there is, then the next part will be to track down where the short is.

Thanks all for your comments and suggestions.
I actually sent a senior level Mercedes executive a very nice note explaining my experiences with this specific dealer and service manager. Sometimes the big boys in corporate can hand down the ol' smack down even better than Google, but you never know.
I like Mercedes so much that I think that they're going to step up. Some dealer service is obviously miles better than others.
