Yeah...you don't have to disconnect it, but it doesn't hurt to be cautious.
And when you disconect the battery in the wrong order, that's when you have to reset everything. It "breaks the circuit" per se.
Any time you need to disconnect the battery, always disconnect the NEGATIVE FIRST, then positive. When you connect them back, it's POSITIVE FIRST, negative second. Do this and you'll never have to reset anything.
