Sunroof Problem

Sunroof Problem
My CLK430 sunroof opens fine but when you close it it hangs up and won't fully shut. I've lubed the rails and any other moving parts and there's no change. Has anyone encountered this or have any suggestions on what could be wrong?
Thanks for any help!

A picture is worth a thousand words, but I’m going to hope this works without me having to grab the SLR. Standing outside the car, on the driver’s side door jamb, with the sunroof open, looking down at the hole in the roof where the sunroof would be if it were closed – you can see your sunroof rides on rails. There is one rail, with a slot down the center, on either side of the sunroof.
Looking toward the front of the rail that's closest to you, just to the outside of it (toward you), there is a guide. Make sure the front of that guide (toward the front of the car), is pushed inward, (away from you, toward the center of the car). The passenger side has a guide as well. Reach over and make sure the front of that guide is pulled inward (toward you, toward the center of the car). Now the sunroof should work fine.
Those guides pull the sunroof wind deflector down. If out of position, the sunroof hits something (the deflector?) and stops. If this makes absolutely no sense, post back and I'll take a picture.

Sorry Marcus, but when you get a chance could you post some pics? I think I understand what you're saying, but I just want to be certain.
My sunroof will slide closed just fine, but when I try to open it, it will stop on occasion and I have to keep hitting the buttom for it to open.

The two attached photos (two angles of the drivers side part) show the part I meant. There is another one on the passenger side. Press that one toward the center of the car.
When my sunroof jammed it did what you (falls profet) are describing.
Press the button and it will back up tow inches, then stop. Press the button again, another two inches, then stop again. The problem was corrected by pushing the parts described inward.
Now, does anyone know how to tighten them? I hope the words 'remove headliner' are not part of the answer.

99CLK320,
I didn't have a problem with my sunroof closing those last few inches but jamming in the middle. I used a spray silicon lube but it never really solved the problem. any recommendations for the proper lubricant?

I greatly appreciate it, buddy! I'll do that this evening when I get home.
Yeah...that stopping every 2 seconds is quite annoying. I thought that the motor might be going out, but I'm glad you had the same issue and resolved it this way.
Thanks again, Sir.

I've used white lithium grease (in the tub, not spray), but I'm not sure it's proper. In the 1990's MB used to recommend 001 989 46 51 for the sunroof. I have no idea what's in it, but "it" costs $77 per tube, tub, or however they package it. Lastly, no mention of that part number in the 2002 Factory Approved Service Products guide. They mention Castrol LM grease for multi-purpose tasks. Castrol LM is lithium grease.

99CLK320,
Castrol LM
I found this on ebay but it can't be right?

it would take forever to use it all.

Hope that the greasing will work. I had a '99 that had the problems described. It was still under warranty and after greasing etc..two trips to the dealer, they found that the linkage had a slight bend. Rather than try to bend it, they replaced it. Worked perfectly from then. If it was out of warranty, I would try a slight bend to see if it helps.

99CLK320,
Thanks Marcus but I was looking for the Castrol stuff in the US. But a tube of another brand would work. You know what they say? "A little dab will do yah."

Thanks MarcusF
I just wanted to say SUPER THANK YOU to MarcusF for the detailed pics and information to fix my CLK430 sunroof problems. I did exactly as you described, and my sunroof now closes with no problems! You saved me tons of time and $$$.
I really admire that you took the time to post the solution and include detailed photos for troubled MB owners, like myself.
thx again!

Ok Marcus found the thread and the pics. Thanks for you efforts. For the record did search for most topics you reviewed but did not advance search by name...
Looked on EPC for a parts diagram and found what is described as a left and right baffle part # A 208 784 01 70 left, and 02 70 right
Not sure they are the parts I need unless the pics are not quite accurate. Amazing how cheaply these guides are made. The metal is uber thin and appears plastic coated, kind of like an afterthought. Never seen such a cheaply designed part from Mercedes...

A couple of tricks have come up in the past two years. Does the roof stop at the point where the wind deflector is supposed to close? If so, does the roof close completely if the wind deflector is manually closed? If yes-yes, there is a 25 cent fix, but let me know because I'd prefer not to take photos of a fix that doesn't apply.

That describes my situation exactly. I just lubricated the rails and wind deflector guide arms. I also adjusted the arms as you suggested, but still no luck. I'm curious about your $0.25 fix...

Sunroof stuck at wind deflector
My sunroof is stuck right at where the wind deflector arm is. It won't open or close from this point. When I try to open or close it, it starts to close, gets stuck about two inches from closing and then opens to about 3-4 inches. When I manually hold the wind deflector down, it still does this. Any suggestions?

If not try close it using manual method. I remember mine did that to once in a while hate it but this used to fix it

There's no button, it's a dial and no matter where you turn it, it does the same thing. When I try to manually close it, it won't budge. It's like it "thinks" there's something caught in it, but there's not. It appears to be on track. I'm thinking the shade may have something to do with it, it's stuck all the way to the back. The way the sunroof is stuck, I can't get to the back bolts to to get the sunroof off.

THIS WORKED ON MY CLK55 2001. IT WAS STUCK OPEN FOR WEEKS AND I TRIED ALL THE DIFFERENT RESET TECHNIQUES.
WHAT I HAD TO DO WAS PUSH THE ADJUSTABLE PART TOWARDS THE OTHER DIRECTION AND THEN PUSH IT INWARDS AS SHOWN IN THE PICTURE!
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!
