CLK 320 Cabriolet Mirror adjustment switch install instructions?
Can anyone provide detailed instructions on how to install the combination window and side mirror adjustment switch on my 2002 CLK320? Of course the first step will be to explain how to remove the wood trim piece in the center console that surrounds the switches. I am a new owner and have no experience workin on MB. I used to be take engine and transmission out of 72 Mach I Mustang and rebuild but have no confidence with the new cars or MBs. However, after a few bouts with sticker shock and $100 per hour mechanics I MUST LEARN. What is even worse is quoting a 1 hour labor bill for replacing a steering damper on this car (a 15 minute job for an amatuer with some good ramps) essentially making the real labor cost $400 hr. Anyway, any help with instructions for replacing the switch is appreciated.

Pry off the shift gate surround and pull up the "wood piece". It is only clipped in place. I forget if pulling up the front or back is easier, but it is simple to figure out. MB recommends their "wedge tool" (115 589 03 59 00). But any plastic tool that is sturdy enough and does not scratch the surfaces will do.
Once you have the cover in hands, it is pretty much the same procedure as taking the tranny out of a '72 Stang

Thanks for the reply
When you say clipped in place, will the clips break or are they designed to come loose and then snap back in. I am really nervous about just prying until something gives. If anyone has pictures it would make me more comfortable about doing this. I have read on other threads about screws in the ash tray. Any advice for what might work as a substitute tool? Large screwdriver, putty knife, crowbar.......?

Just pull up!
It snaps right out and back in, and you would have to be quite insensitive to break something. Take a look at the attached work instruction. If you use a crowbar, though, you might run that risk... The screws that hold the ashtray are underneath.
The wedge tool is pictured in the work instruction. You can either carry some 10-15 bucks (if I recall correctly) to the MB stealership, invest little more in something more versatile, such as http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...=STRK:MEWAX:IT, or get inventive and look for a plastic bit with a wedge shape in your garage.
Hope this helps.
