Camshaft or crankshaft position sensor, what does this thing exactly do. Will it cause your car to stall, die, Then hard to restart.

A crankshaft position sensor tells the ECU the position of the crankshaft. This is commonly referred to as the CPS. If the ECU doesn’t receive a signal from the CPS, programming logic tells it the engine isn’t running, so fuel and spark are disabled. The lack of fuel and spark are why the engine stops running and won’t restart.

Can i change this sensor myself, or will it require more technical expertise. I try to do most car work myself, but never owned a benz. I hear its located down on the side of the tranny , and requires a long extention to reach.... I use to work on aircraft in the Air Force... so I'll give it a try with a little hints from you guys.

99CLK320,
yes you can replace the CPS yourself. Look under the DIY thread and there should be some pics there. the CPS is located down behind the driver's side head at the back of the engine and may actually be on the bell housing. I've not eyeballed it myself but have looked at the pics and if I remember correclty it takes a #8 torques socket. anybody out there correct the socket size?

The picture on this site is very small. But i see what it looks like from a pic on ebay. They sell it for $68 plus 12.95 shipping. I'll have to order it and pray this works, but from the threads here, it seems to be the thing to fix. Thanks.
