The Car Needs Ball Joints at 30K Miles? W208...

Folks,

I just got back from the dealer to have the coolant flushed/replaced. No big deal.

I asked them to check the car over since I am taking a long trip in a few weeks. They come back and tell me that the car will soon need the upper and lower ball joints replaced. At 30K miles I see this as very strange.

What is your collective experience in this area? Who has had to get this done and at what mileage? Or is the dealer working me over?

Thanks.

One way to find out is to jack ur car up and grab the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock.tilt the wheel back and forth and if u feel some play between it.then yeah ur in need of balljoints.I recommend changing the lower balljoints first cuz they're cheaper and faster to fix.I did mine myself with a tool from harbor freight.

99CLK320,
do what was recommended and if you don't feel any play get a second opinion from a reputable independent benz mechanic. with only 30k I'm doubful you need them changed.

Back and forth play is wheel bearings. vertical play is ball joints. Visually verify movement at the balljoint itself to check. Any movement of the stud and hub assembly without the lca, and it's toast.

Correct...kinda 6 and 12 o'clock is wheel bearings. 3 and 9 9 o'clock is used to check drag link and tie rods. Vertical play is of course ball joints.

Also 30k is not uncommon for lowers...milage of course varies. Also depends on the condition of the roads you drive on. When I worked in Manhattan we did A LOT of ball joints.
